Nearly 85 percent of those arrested or cited in connection with shoplifting calls at Eagan’s new outlet mall were people of color, according to a Star Tribune analysis of nearly 1,000 calls to police in the first eight months the center was open.
The percentage of blacks and other minorities arrested or charged with shoplifting offenses at Eagan’s Twin Cities Premium Outlet was higher than at nearby Burnsville Center, in all of Minneapolis or at a similar outlet mall in Albertville.
Eagan police say the mall has attracted organized and sophisticated shoplifting rings, but say they typically rely on the mall and store security to report suspected shoplifting.
“We get these calls from third parties who we believe are providing information in good faith,” Eagan Police Chief Jim McDonald said. “When we get down there we don’t get to adjust the circumstances.”
Mall officials deny that they or the retailers are singling out any particular group.

I think the new legal theory is that if anything like 85% of people being caught for breaking some law are “people of color,” we stop enforcing that law.
Well, tell the people of color to stop stealing...or, at least stop getting caught.
I worked in a call center for a major retailer during the seasonal period 2 years ago. Being “followed” and “profiled” in stores by security personnel was a frequent complaint. It had to be referred to a risk management specialist. They were often compensated with gift cards. Sad.
Security isn’t as sophisticated as the Mall of America and it’s new, so the security learning curve is still pretty steep.

I knew a hispanic woman years ago who told me she grew up shoplifting. She said she got very good at it and could steal very large items. I think she was in her early 20’s at the time and said she stopped. I wonder about that.
She said all her friends did it, too. I think the reason you find a cluster of the same minority pulling these sorts of crimes is that it becomes a popular activity within their social group.

Do these people really think the store owners don’t mind being shoplifted by whites, to the point that they wouldn’t prosecute it? That’s insane.

Modern-day gypsies have that swarming technique down pat as well. Anything that’s not nailed down. We had a passel of them who stayed at the hotel I worked at, and double-locked the door to my shop while they were there...
It wasn’t “racial profiling”; it was criminal profiling.
Sure they are, they are singling out the people who are stealing from them.......duh....the Amish hardly have room in their buggies to haul away refrigerators....besides, they don't have anywhere to plug them in.!!!
My problem is that this outlet mall is way too close to where I live. And there will be protests.
It’s going to be a long, hot summer for many of us this year. Across the country.
A guy I work with spent several years in theft prevention, and he said that a majority of the perps were black (he’s black too BTW)
I’m not surprised.
A friend is a retired detective who worked credit/identity fraud. Same story.
