I worked in a call center for a major retailer during the seasonal period 2 years ago. Being “followed” and “profiled” in stores by security personnel was a frequent complaint. It had to be referred to a risk management specialist. They were often compensated with gift cards. Sad.
I knew a hispanic woman years ago who told me she grew up shoplifting. She said she got very good at it and could steal very large items. I think she was in her early 20’s at the time and said she stopped. I wonder about that.
She said all her friends did it, too. I think the reason you find a cluster of the same minority pulling these sorts of crimes is that it becomes a popular activity within their social group.
