Just when you think the GOP might modernize, the knuckles start dragging again, this time on immigration and trade. Its political suicide.
If you want to see where the impulse to reform the Republican Party in a more libertarian direction of limited government, social tolerance, and free markets goes to die, look no further than the recent attacks on immigration and freer trade by Jeff Sessions, the influential senator from Alabama. Every time the GOP seems finally ready to orient itself in a forward-looking, post-culture-war direction, some holdover from an America that never quite existed to begin with blows his whistle and the next generation of would-be party leaders fall into line like the obedient von Trapp children in Sound of Music.

Liberals love giving the GOP advice.
Hey Nick!
Suck Harder!
You got that right!
I just love the condescension. “Every time the GOP seems finally ready to orient itself in a forward-looking, post-culture-war direction.”
“Forward” for these people means destroying liberty, suspending the Constitution, and opening our borders to invaders whose only purpose is to pick our pocket.
Hey Gillespie — show us how forward YOU are by feeding and housing a Mexican family in YOUR home!
There are just no words . . . .

Bottom line: whatever a Prog apparatchik declares backward is any resistance to his bosses' relentless repression.
If Sessions is being criticized by The Daily Breast, he must be doing something right.
I like to think the real man in black would kick Nick’s ass for being such an idiot.
When a journalist calls something the Republicans do “political suicide” then you know it’s a winner for the Republicans. Standing up to defend the american worker is a winning strategy for the Republicans.
Salute to Senator Jeff Sessions, bump!!
Jeff Sessions is one of the few in the Senate who is actually standing for the citizens, the rule of law and American sovereignty.
All things the left wish to destroy.
And by left I mean all of the Democrat Party and most of the GOP.
when you are so totally on the wrong path, your first step should be to turn around and go back to where you lost your way.
If the GOP is FINALLY turning around and going back, then maybe there is hope for this country after all.
Jeff Sessions bump for later...
“Libertarian” Nick Gillespie sounds much like liberal-arian. “Social tolerance” is a BEE ESS word meaning forget our Judeo-Christian foundations (and it only goes one way!). I’m disappointed to say the least... as I lean (real) libertarian myself.
“Modernize” = move left?
But the hippy dippy 60’s where the professors still live is in the past.
Incorrect. That number was revised to 40% eight years after the 2004 election. The original 44% number was repeatedly challenged by multiple organizations, including NBC News, Pew Hispanic Center, and pollster Latino Decisions.
Since 1960, no Republican presidential candidate has ever received more than 40% of the Hispanic vote.
Re: “In a remarkable 1980 debate between Reagan and Bush I, the two candidates for the GOP nomination literally outdid themselves not simply in praising legal immigrants but illegal ones...”
Reagan - 1984 Hispanic Vote - 34%
GHW Bush - 1988 Hispanic Vote - 30%
Re: “And, as the Cato Institutes Alex Nowrasteh documents in his exhaustive rebuttal to Sessionss Washington Post piece, immigrants not only consume less welfare and commit less crime than the average American...”
Foreign born residents in the USA consume three times as much welfare as native born white Americans.
Foreign born residents in the USA commit twice as much crime as native born white Americans.
I’ve always had an issue with what I call “doctrinaire” libertarians. They’re so wedded to the libertarian principles that they will follow them to the destruction of the country that allows them to practice them. The desire to have open borders is a suicide sentence on this country, but it follows Nick Gillespie’s doctrine. Of course, he isn’t going to like it when the US collapses under the weight of its own “enlightenment”.
Sessions is right, bill is a disaster. McConnell should be horse whipped for even considering this crap>
“CRITICAL ALERT: Top Five Concerns With Trade Promotion Authority”
And not mentioned in this article is the prospect that once passed Obama could use it to go after the 2nd amendment. And he would if he could. Yes, I know it is protected in the constitution, but when has he let that hold him back before.
Gary Johnson got 1% of the vote and Jeff Sessions got 100% of the vote the last time they went to an election.
Gary Johnson is preferred by Liberaltarians because he supports the Gaystapo unlike Ron Paul who is more consistent in saying blacks and gays shouldn’t special treatment.
Reagan was wrong and Mondale was right on immigration.
Cruz is wrong and Warren is right on trade.
