Tallest residential tower west of the Mississippi taking shape in Austin

A dramatic change is in store for Austin’s skyline, as plans move forward on what now has become a 58-story tower that would be the city’s tallest building and the largest residential tower west of the Mississippi River.

The tower, named the Independent, would rise 685 feet on downtown’s southwestern edge, eclipsing the Austonian condominium high-rise in downtown Austin by two feet and two stories.

The Independent would bring 370 new luxury condominiums to market, priced from the mid-$300,000s to more than $3 million, the developer said. The project features a contemporary, tiered design by its architect, Austin-based Rhode:Partners.

The developers planning the project — Austin-based firms Constructive Ventures and Aspen Heights — said they expect to announce a groundbreaking date and construction schedule within a few months, once financing is lined up.

The tower would be the final piece in the high-profile redevelopment of the Seaholm District, a former industrial area that housed the Seaholm Power Plant and the Thomas C. Green Water Treatment Plant. Now, the area is rapidly transforming with new apartments, condos, shops, restaurants, offices, a hotel, a public library, a Trader Joe’s grocery and more.

City officials say the $2 billion in public and private investment pouring into the area is expected to generate millions of dollars in property and sales tax revenue in coming decades, including more than $62 million for affordable housing.

Devastating the noble skyline of the state capital.

When I grew up there years ago, it was not permitted that any building rose above the state capital.

Now it is being buried beneath the debris of high rises.

A shame.

The Austin skyline used to be beautiful. The Frost Bank building ruined it. Now they’re making it even worse.

Big construction projects provide all sorts of opportunities for crooked politicians.

I lived in Austin from 92 to 2000 and remember the rule of nothing higher than the capital. Capital building is beautiful. Money talks.

No thanks. The first floor is far enough away from the ground for me.

Some folks will love it. Good for them. I don't intend to live that far from the ground. I wonder how many others feel the same? ;)

Liberals persist in banding together and infesting small places so their control can be consolidated and more easily controlled.

It is ironic that in most any movie you see about some Dystopian end to society or a zombie invasion, places like this are sieged and/or destroyed and abandoned.

Let them do it if they must. Probably won’t be any preppers there anyway.

Heh...back in 1966 in USMC Boot Camp, the drill instructors would occasionally get a little buzzed late at night - and one of ‘em loved to sing “Three Queers in a Phone Booth”, much to the amusement of the other two.

I couldn’t stand it.

I remember seeing an article about an apartment building that was so tall, the upper residents were sometimes in clouds. They couldn’t even tell what the weather was like, and had to call downstairs to find out.

Good. Now if they would only build roads and highways to SUPPORT the new residents pouring into the center of Austin.

9 bucks and some change. That’s what is costs me to take the toll road around Austin.

Worth. Every. Penny.

I'm glad they replaced a useless power plant and water treatment plant with yuppie condos.

It's certainly a good thing that Austinians don't need water or power!

Mrs. Tick & I think the Frost Building looks like a giant nose-hair trimmer.

I lived in-and-near Austin for 30 years. I am so GLAD to be away from that mess, and in the country. Austin has, indeed, been wrecked by the Kommiefornia wrecking ball.

including more than $62 million for affordable housing.

Wow! How can they build "affordable" housing that cheap??

I cannot imagine paying that much for a cubicle to live in. No yard, no trees, no private pool, no critters. Guess I’m too much of a free range girl.

Trains and skyscrapers are libtard phallic objects. There isn't a commuter train or residential tower anywhere in America that isn't full of libtards. To live in an office building means: no fireplace, no gun, no normal dog, no loud music, no barbecue, and being surrounded by commies in 3 dimensions.

Several of my friends worked on the 105th floor. A two story is plenty for me.
