How could one not want the death penalty?

The Boston Globe has published a heartbreaking appeal from the parents of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy who died in the Boston Marathon bombing. Bill and Denise Richard (who were also injured in the blast, along with their two surviving children) are asking prosecutors to stop seeking the death penalty for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was recently found guilty of carrying out the attacks with his late brother, Tamerlan. Rather the seeing Tsarnaev killed — and enduring the years of legal maneuvering that generally precede an execution in the United States — the Richards want the 21-year-old sentenced to life in prison "without any possibility of release and waiving all of his rights to appeal."

We understand all too well the heinousness and brutality of the crimes committed. We were there. We lived it. The defendant murdered our 8-year-old son, maimed our 7-year-old daughter, and stole part of our soul. We know that the government has its reasons for seeking the death penalty, but the continued pursuit of that punishment could bring years of appeals and prolong reliving the most painful day of our lives. We hope our two remaining children do not have to grow up with the lingering, painful reminder of what the defendant took from them, which years of appeals would undoubtedly bring.
For us, the story of Marathon Monday 2013 should not be defined by the actions or beliefs of the defendant, but by the resiliency of the human spirit and the rallying cries of this great city. We can never replace what was taken from us, but we can continue to get up every morning and fight another day. As long as the defendant is in the spotlight, we have no choice but to live a story told on his terms, not ours. The minute the defendant fades from our newspapers and TV screens is the minute we begin the process of rebuilding our lives and our family.
In a statement responding to the Richards' letter, United States attorney for Massachusetts Carmen M. Ortiz said, "As the case moves forward, we will continue to do all we can to protect and vindicate those injured and those who have passed away." The sentencing phase of Tsarnaev's trial is set to begin next week.
Tough.

Just release him into the general prison population and then schedule a 24 hour maintenance on all the prison cameras.

With all due respect and sympathy for their losses, this is much bigger than what one family prefers. We are talking about the security of the United States now and going forward. Best that this Terrorist is given the death sentence even if that means he spends the next 30 years sitting on his backside doing nothing. If he is not given the death sentence, it remains likely that Obama may want to trade him to another country for some equally repulsive but American scum. Obama cannot be trusted on such matters. We all know that now.
This is understandable from an individual perspective, but the bomber involved himself with all of us by his actions, so justice is to be dispensed swiftly and dispassionately for the sake and safety of the greater population. We could perhaps, however, baptize this young man and feed him some bacon before he departs this life.
What is wrong with this country. We have become a nation of limp wristed pansies who want the world to be fair. Grow a pair America.
However, at 21 sending him to rot in the supermax prison in Colorado where he will be in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day does have its appeal. He will slowly go crazy and die totally forgotten. Just be sure his toilet faces Mecca, the food contains lots of pork and his only toilet paper is the Koran.
There's no reason Dzhokhar Tsarnaev can't be fast-tracked to the death chamber as well. The parents should be arguing that he be killed, and as quickly as possible.

McVeigh wasn't fast-tracked. He fast-tracked himself. Whatever anyone might say about him, he took his medicine like a man:
McVeigh dropped his remaining appeals, saying that he would rather die than spend the rest of his life in prison.
Im not going to judge the family because they have been through unimaginable horror, but this monster deserves to die..he stood next to a child knowing he would die and did it anyway..you can’t fix a monster, just put him in the town square and let the folks take care of him, nice and slow
Yeah this may sound cold but they’re not the only ones whose opinions matter.
Sympathies to his family, but they are part of the ‘compassionate, oh-so-tolerant’ Libs who don’t want to punish out of their ‘understanding of all cultures’ outlook on life. With no accountability for their actions, more will murder and injure innocents in the name of their Messiah. This man must be held accountable for his murders.......period.
With all respect to the family, their wishes are almost meaningless in this case. Their child was no one to this murderer. Their child was not killed because he represented anything special or unique to the Tsarnaevs. Their child was simply ... an American. My children, or your children, or anyone's children would have suited his purpose. So even though this family bears a greater burden than the rest of us for the loss, it is only circumstantially so, and the crime is -- even more than an ordinary murder -- a crime against the United States of America and her People.
Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev must die. We executed Timothy McVeigh -- who murdered nineteen children of various others' families -- withing four years of his death sentence. Tsarnaev deserves the same fate, with the same expediency. But more importantly, the People of the United States deserve swift justice as well.
All these people are doing with their bleeding heart rhetoric is putting someone else’s kid in danger from Islamic terrorists.
