The parents of youngest victim in the Boston marathon bombing have called on federal authorities to drop the death penalty as a possible punishment for bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Bill and Denise Richard's eight-year-old son was one of three people killed in the explosions in April 2013.

If someone takes terrorist actions that result in the death of my child, you damn well better believe I what capital punishment. ASAP
It’s actually disturbing to see other parents express a different opinion, especially concerning their young eight year old child.
Is this supposed to express more love for the child? It actually lessens my sense that they are upset about the loss.
As I said, it’s disturbing.
They are free to forgive him in their hearts. They are not free to support imposing the ongoing cost and risk of letting this dirtbag continue to consume oxygen on society at large.

I don’t agree with their views, but their wishes need to be given appropriate weight as the parents of one of the victims. They can give him a life sentence for the murder of their son and death sentences for all of the other victims. Only if every immediate family member, of every single victim agreed would I go with a life sentence. But as long as just one supports execution then as far as I’m concerned it’s the long drop + short rope for Tsarnaev.

Called this a while ago even though other RE freepers said 'this situation was different'. If the parents of the murdered child don't want death, that will be that.
I have no quarrel with these people. I think they’re wrong but I’m often wrong too. They’ve got more invested in this matter than I do and have borne pain I can’t imagine. Peace to them both.
Maybe, maybe not. But here’s the question, would you support a person locked up for the rest of his functional life?
In the rule of law, it’s not The Parents v. Tsarnaev, but The People v. Tsarnaev. When he killed his victims, he became the adversary of all of us, and it is for us through the mechanism of the jury, and not the parents, to decide his fate, based on the evidence (proven guilty) and the law.

It's not about you. It's the law. That's why victim impact statements are irrelevant and actually scandalous in a court of justice. Are they sworn statements? Does anyone cross-examine the relatives who make them? The evil of crimes like murder and rape transcends anyone's feelings about them—which of course sane people respect as a matter of course.
Justice is bigger than all of us because it's before God. Without the objectivity of justice—based on facts, not feelings or circumstances—it quickly descends into lynching.
Just release him into the general population of any prison in America.
Life without the possibility of living more than a couple of hours.

I have no idea if this is true or not...but, IF they are receiving a LARGE financial award from the city/marathon organization, perhaps they are feeling some regret over that. I don’t know how else to explain this typical “progressive” action on their part.
Depends on the crime.
