..New York has nine specialised high schools, of which eight admit students using the citys Specialist High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). The education they offer rivals that of private schools that charge $40,000 a year. The high schools are free. The most popular, Stuyvesant, sends roughly 25% of its graduates to the Ivy League or other top colleges. The schools unofficial mantra is Sleep, study, socialise: pick two. It admits 4% of test-takers, pickier than Harvard.
New Yorks Democratic mayor, Bill de Blasio thinks the SHSAT favours parents who can afford tutors. He wants to broaden (ie, relax) the admissions criteria, to help poorer black and Hispanic families.
The SHSAT also faces a legal challenge. The NAACP, the countrys biggest civil-rights legal defence fund, joined others in 2012 to file a suit demanding changes in admissions procedures. New York Citys public schools, the suit claims, are among the most racially segregated in the country
... Asians make up more than 70% of pupils at Stuyvesant; blacks and Hispanics combined make up 3%, and falling. White pupils took 80% of places in 1970; now it is less than 25%.

You are wrong.
The admission tests don’t have DFQ or anything remotely close.
I passed them all and played baseball every day of the summer.
I also went to the library and read a book every night and didn’t waste my time fooling with video games.
This is not about a foreign culture.
It’s about lazy American parents and kids.
You get a high mark on the test, you get in.
Period, until now apparently.
It’s hard to know hat you’re getting at.
How many of Mr. TA Edison’s patents, were absolute U.S. gov’t sponsored lies?
What are you talking about? The Orient was, for thousands of years, the major other pole of world civilization. While Britons were engaged in human sacrifice and running around in animal skins, the Chinese were fighting combined arms wars with armies of hundreds of thousands, with logistical tails to match. Sun Tzu's Art of War was written 2500 years ago, a thousand years before English became a written language. The bureaucracies that run governments around the world today are based on the Chinese principle of meritocracy that government should be based on recruiting the most talented people available, based on a system of examinations. This replaced what had been a tradition of staffing the government with landed aristocrats. Please do not confuse your willful ignorance with reality.
As to the Christians in the Middle East, they are anti-semitic to a fault and identify more with their Arab Muslim counterparts than they do with the West. The Crusaders got a taste of Arab Christian perfidy when they invaded the region a millennium ago. These people signed up with Muhammad's conquering armies the first chance they got. At least Iraqi Sunnis are merely cooperating cooperating with co-religionists when they support ISIS. Arab Christians went over to the Muslim enemy - Muhammad himself.
Re Asian conflicts, I'm not Chinese, but if I were, I'd urge the US to stand aside as China doubles the size of the Chinese empire. And deep thinker that you are, you'd agree - let them kill each other off.
This same thing has been going on for many decades. When I was taking pre-engineering courses 30 years ago, my Asian friends had to get higher scores than I did to get accepted into the same schools. They had quotas and the Asians were over represented in engineering programs.
These guys were very smart, very motivated and very dedicated and it had little if anything to do with memorizing questions for entrance exams. People can believe what they want about the reasons why they do so well. My guess is that it is a combination of factors.
It takes it all to be exceptional.
No amount of hard work and discipline can overcome a lack of creativity in problem solving.
Asian americans can just go study in china and be among the intellectual elite, and be immersed in a superior educational system all day long. There must be many schools in China better than Harvard, if anything you say is true.
By the way, you were previously saying that Christians in the middle east should be left to die, right? And the real pressing social issue is that more chinese need to make it to Harvard, right?
You’re starting to say weird things too.
guy one goes to all the parties , watches sports and TV all day then the night before the big exam finally studies a few hours.
Guy 2 studies 10 hours every day with full determined focus to pass the exam
who would you bet will get a higher grade? #2 of course.
intelligence means nothing . it's about hard work, determination ,persistence and focus
I don’t know how old you are now, but that’s not how it is now. There have been many articles posted on Free Republic about what it takes to get in these schools.
EVERYBODY’S got a 4.0.
So you have to give up baseball and take a college course over the summer so you have a 4.3 and beat out the “lazy” American.
I tend to think the Chinese did themselves a fair amount of genetic damage in the first half of the 20th century and that it has taken them awhile to recover. Just a theory...
And he didn't spend 12 hours per day at a chinese cramming/dog-training center.
Thomas Edison patented 1000 inventions in the USA alone , the phonograph, light bulb etc. This was when there was no technology , no electricity , no information(internet)
He would disagree with you as his quote shows
“Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.”
Thomas A. Edison

I’d say genius is focused intensity, hard work ,thinking, determination , persistence ,practice ,sacrifice and self discipline
By the way, you were previously saying that Christians in the middle east should be left to die, right? And the real pressing social issue is that more chinese need to make it to Harvard, right?
Why should Asian Americans be forced to study in a foreign country, in a foreign language? How would you feel if someone told you your ethnic group should get its education in Timbuktu, or wherever your ancestors are from?
As to Arab Christians, it's too expensive to protect them there. Let them come here, where we can at least hope to dilute a thousand years' worth of anti-Western Muslim propaganda.
It isn’t about embracing communism. I reject the premise that American taxes should be funding American schools in America that are run by foreign standards, to the exclusion of Americans.
Especially since it’s the AMERICAN education system that invented the modern age, everything from steam power to the moon landing to Silicon Valley.
In what respect?
Entire childhoods and teenage years spent at chinese-style dog-training centers with no time out for anything that's not on government/standardized tests... that's the future for american kids.
So you support the communist DeBlasio’s position?
And you base it on false assumptions.
There are no “foreign standards”.
Weird Chinese supremacist stuff about how superior China is.
