Governor Bobby Jindal of Lousiana, who pledged not to raise taxes, has raised taxes, aided by the radical Islam loving Grover Norquist.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was caught in a jam. He had to plug a $1.6 billion projected deficit for next year — 20 percent of Louisiana’s general fund — and he had to do it without violating an anti-tax pledge he made to Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), the influential conservative group headed by Grover Norquist. Jindal’s solution: eliminating $526 million in tax rebates, most notably for the state’s business inventory tax. Norquist’s group blessed the decision, concluding that ending tax rebates would not amount to a tax increase. But that distinction has prompted ridicule from state lawmakers and political commentators on both the right and the left, who accuse Jindal of selling out the state’s tax policy to Norquist.

The business inventory tax is a truly bizarre anti-business tax, taxing the inventory (the goods) that businesses

Is that what they are calling a tax increase?

What type of ‘rebates’?

I’m not sure which is worse. Raising taxes after you said you would not.

Or consulting with Grover Norquist.

A tax increase is taking more money from individuals or corporations and placing into govt coffers.

Yes, eliminating tax rebates is a tax increase

Jindal’s a loon. Any chance of a real (and smart) Conservative in there?

As someone who now lives in East Texas and used to own a business in LA, I can tell you this. LA has a very unfriendly business climate compared to Texas. And, taxes are a BIG issue. Chances are that when Jindal made that promise, LA still had hurricane money to spend. But, sooner or later, that was going to dry up. There are many issues to consider regarding Jindal, but I can tell you he’s not the guy for the white house.

Louisiana state government is really a very different animal, and I don't think you realize how different until you've seen it from the inside.

I like Bobby Jindal as a person, and I generally agree with his political messaging. The actions of his administration, unfortunately, have not always been in line with that political message. He has sought to govern as a conservative, but that conservative vision has not always been put into practice. And the state has suffered for it.

But I'm not prepared to lay all of the blame for that at Jindal's feet. Some, but not all. There are forces close to Jindal working against his conservative philosophy that he has, in the past, acquiesced to for one reason or another.

Also, he made an enemy of the Obama administration pretty early on, and that has had a significant negative impact on the state as well.

Jindal, as a person and a conservative, would make a great president. Unfortunately, I don't think he'd be able to extricate himself from the forces with their own agenda currently in his administration. In fact, I fear he may be more susceptible to that kind of manipulation once in D.C.

With all that said, I'd still vote for him for president in a heartbeat because he's better than any Democrat out there and several of the current Republican candidates.

RE:”A tax increase is taking more money from individuals or corporations and placing into govt coffers.”

I recall any tax rebate I ever heard of was just the government handing out $$$ for doing something the government wanted them too(like solar panels), where I come from the government handing out $$$ is welfare.

I mean if the Obamacare subsidies got cut I wouldn't call that raising taxes

Tax rebates are welfare .... as a reward for doing what our government masters say, like a tax credit.

Is cutting EITC supposed to be the same raising taxes.

As someone who still lives in Louisiana, he is definitely not the guy for the White House.

Jindal is actually a truly brilliant guy, and he is a conservative, although he has not been very effective getting his conservative policies into place.

His problem is that he just isn't a great politician in terms of getting things done in the political sausage maker.

That is definitely a strike against him in terms of seeking higher office... but I don't hold it against him as a person that he isn't very effective wheeling and dealing behind the scenes with the cronies and the crooks.

I disagree.

A tax is taking money from individuals and placing in government hands.

That is what takes place in this case.

Think of it this way: the govt has a tax on the books. In LA case, the state decided NOT to levy the tax by giving a rebate. If the rebate goes away, the tax comes back.

How in the world is that welfare?

This was nothing more than the same welfare that Obama gave out in his stimulus plan, its libs that lie and call this welfare tax cuts. Shame on those who lie about this as part of their unrelated agenda. Its despicable

Refundable tax credit programs call for a business or individual to receive a refund that is worth more than the amount of taxes owed. This means the state ends up paying certain companies and individuals back for taxes they never would have collected in the first place.
Bobby Jindal will propose scaling back Louisiana's tax credits Friday(February 26, 2015 The Times-Picayune)

Tax credits are welfare, its the Dems who call them tax cuts as with Obama’s stimulus, this is just part of the ‘destroy every possible candidate but Cruz’ agenda strategy.

He should cut them to save taxpayer $$$$

If one gets a credit for more than the actual tax one would normally pay, then that is indeed welfare.
