The return of the egg? New dietary guidelines may downplay cholesterol risks

Eating a whole egg, yolks and all, has gotten a bad reputation over the years, but new dietary guidelines may send egg white-only omelets by the wayside. The recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which are now under review, are expected to downplay the importance of lowering cholesterol intake.

The most recent set of guidelines in 2010 recommended consuming less than 300 milligrams per day of dietary cholesterol, which is about the amount in one egg.

In the coming weeks, the committee is expected to release the report for use by the Agriculture and Health and Human Services Departments to write the final version of the 2015 dietary guidelines, due by the end of this year.

For decades, the government has warned against diets high in cholesterol. But now many nutritionists believe that cholesterol intake may not significantly impact cholesterol blood levels or increase the risk of heart disease in healthy adults, according to the Washington Post.

When my father had his first heart attack in 1978, he was told, no eggs. When I had a cardiac arrest in 2008, I thought, no more eggs for me. The cardiologist said, why not? The recommendations have changed a lot in 30 or 40 years. The emphasis is not on cholesterol that occurs naturally, but rather, the saturated and trans fats added to processed food.

Since I went low-carb on a diet heavy on egg consumption, my cholesterol has gone way down.

People seem to think you are what you eat....literally. Eating fat doesn't make you fat. I brought my cholesterol levels down to elite athlete levels by being on a high fat diet but no carbs. I don't have the self discipline to keep it there but at least I know how.

I like to boil about 5 eggs in the evening to have them in the fridge to snack on during the day.

I've done no carbs and I still had high triglycerides. I just think mine will always be high. It's odd because my blood sugars are normal.

Caution for those of you with prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer feeds on fat, not sugar. In particular, PCa feeds on choline. Eggs are rich in choline. In general, fat is good if it is from vegetable sources, bad if from animal / dairy.

For me: olive oil, peanut butter, nuts. No eggs, animal fat/protein once per day.

yes! whole foods... real foods is the way to go... eggs, butter (not margarine), meat, fish, veggies, fruit, plain greek yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese... red wine... the one whole food i limit is wheat... bread, pasta... i like it, but if i want to keep my weight down or feel my best, i cut it from my meals... i have learned to replace flour tortilla with corn tortilla...

just today i had a yummy baked porkchop--lightly breaded--and sauteed asparagus and grape tomatoes in butter for lunch... protein and veggies are my staples... breakfast was a cup of coffee and a bowl of greek yogurt, raspberries and blackberries...

diet soda or just about diet anything, or low-fat food items are foods i do not consume...

when i do indulge in something like a cheeseburger, i will go ahead and have a real Coca-Cola with it... otherwise i drink plain iced tea...

i love food and splurge good money on whole fresh ingredients...
