Southern California Edison IT workers 'beyond furious' over H-1B replacements

Information technology workers at Southern California Edison (SCE) are being laid off and replaced by workers from India. Some employees are training their H-1B visa holding replacements, and many have already lost their jobs.
.
.
The H-1B program "was supposed to be for projects and jobs that American workers could not fill," this worker said. "But we're doing our job. It's not like they are bringing in these guys for new positions that nobody can fill.

"Not one of these jobs being filled by India was a job that an Edison employee wasn't already performing," he said.
.
.
SCE employees said that since August, when the layoffs began, the composition of the IT workplace began to change. "I see a lot of Indian people walking the halls, and less Americans," said a third IT worker interviewed.

Heard this is happening at FedEx too.

from Computerword comments on the story:

Folks, when will we say enough.

Yesterday it was Disney.

Today these guys.

There are only 3.6 million IT jobs and about a million of us have already lost everything, yet we continue to hide our head in the sands of denial and say quit whining.

This is real, and it is happening in all job occupations.

Furthermore, we have only created 400,000 jobs since 1999 no matter what the government says and I prove it in this video and show how many visa holders are scheduled to come in and take our jobs.

Unless you want to live in a shed like I am where you are going to be evicted in 30 days or less, it is time for you to pull off your rose colored glasses and work with us to put a stop to this madness.

All of us have some outstanding skills and we have the ability to get real accurate numbers for each of our respective communities and get them in front of the people that are oblivious to what is happening.

We can open their eyes, but it won't happen with us praying that it won't happen to us.

How about we do more to Keep America At Work by hiring Americans in America and sending these Indian companies back to India.

When they learn that ‘brain drain’ has been complete for years, and these people have NO problem solving skills and they give away degrees with cereal box tops, they will stop.

Unless they are out of business by then

I'd feel more compassion for "southern California IT workers" if I didn't think they probably voted 9-1 for Obama, who is running this sh&t.

Welcome to the real world, SoCal. I've been in IT for 17 years, and my ass is bleeding so bad I'm relegated to doing remote support.

How's that whole multinational economic thing working out for ya?

Your radical liberal government in action.

I remember back when you could walk into a McDonalds and see OBVIOUS AMERICANS working in those jobs. Now they are held by OBVIOUS ILLEGALS, many of which can barely speak useful English. It is a catastrophic trend in America. Just follow the money.

I saw this happen at a Japanese company that I used to work for. I trained my replacement. The employers do not even try to find an American. They go straight for the HS-1B employees. HS stands for “half salary”.

I see this a lot now in the financial sector; not just outsourcing of jobs, but trafficking of Asians to do the work right here in the US. Americans are laid off, and Asians take the jobs for less.

Part of this is just getting Americans accustomed to the idea that if they are fortunate enough to find work, they’ll be expected to work 50+ hours per week as “salaried employees” (read: unpaid overtime). Our standard of living has been falling for decades, and now it is just obvious to a wider group of Americans.

In many workplaces Hispanics were the “replacement blacks”; Asians are now the “replacement whites”.

The Dems want them as voters once they get them hooked on the public teat. The Chamber of Commerce, and their GOP stooges, want them as cheap labor. Its no wonder we have open borders so that immigrants take US jobs despite middle class America being strongly opposed to it.

It's just not fair that American White males invented just about everything in the world before anyone else had a chance.
Governments must level the playing field in the name of fairness, eh?

Also, put women and gays in charge of many of the high-tech companies where these innovations occurred. That'll fix it!

Diversity is our strength, remember?

We IT professionals in some cases are our own worst enemies.

Every two years or so some egotistic conman in college develops a "world changing" programming language that everyone MUST know in order to compete.

This allows the know-nothing managers to justify hiring H-1B's and college grads who kinda-sorta know the new language to appear more qualified than veteran programmers who haven't had time yet to pick it up.

Republicans would probably support business owners and not stand in the way of H1Bs. After all, they supported immigration for the hotel industry, medical, food service.

Being laid off from a major utility is tough. The openings in the unregulated world tend to want experience in the unregulated world. It’s a cultural difference. I worked both sides.

In fact, I’m one of few white guys in an Indian owned firm in Southern California. I did take a 20% cut in pay, but wanted to stay local.

Respectfully, you may like to think again. Take a look at the red/blue map of California - except in SF, LA, and the border area, it is overwhelmingly red. Most of these guys are from Riverside/San Bernardino/Orange County. I know quite a few SCE employees - they wouldn’t P on 0 if he was on fire.

Thank you.

When the bosses are raking in millions on underperforming contracts, it’s nice to have a bunch of subservient H-1B’s around to keep their noses to the grindstone continuing to write bad code against poorly crafted requirements.

It’s cyclical. They will love the cheaper employees until management complains about the communication problems. You never know when they will say something stupid to someone they consider an underling, such as :

“The blacks are not much for working”(actually heard this one). Also heard one call a mid-level woman manager “stupid” to her face.
