Since 2010, America has put more people back to work than Europe, Japan, and all advanced economies combined, President Obama said during his State of the Union Address on Tuesday. Our manufacturers have added almost 800,000 new jobs. Some of our bedrock sectors, like our auto industry, are booming. But there are also millions of Americans who work in jobs that didnt even exist 10 or 20 years ago — jobs at companies like Google, and eBay, and Tesla.
While Politico pointed out that most of the companies Obama touted are big, left-leaning D.C. spenders, his choice of mentioning eBay in highlighting the revived U.S. economy is ironic considering that the next day, the company announced it would be laying off thousands of employees.
The Washington Free Beacon has the scoop:
[Touting eBay] now seems like an unfortunate choice, because less than 24 hours after Obamas speech, eBayannouncedit was cutting 2,400 jobs, or about 7 percent of its workforce. Investors welcomed the layoffs, and the companys stock jumpedmore than 4 percenton the news.
The company has spent million of dollars lobbying the federal government, and has contributed mostly to Democrats over the years. Its president and CEO, John Donahoe, has donated almost exclusively to Democrats. He gave thousands to Obamas campaign in 2012, and has contributed more than $90,000 to Democratic candidates and committees since 2006, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
The Obama effect lives on.
I’m sorry for the people who will lose their jobs, I know how they feel, but do you wonder if the Ebay cringed when they heard Lord Foul tout their employer? Isn’t it pretty well established that bad things happen to any enterprise touted by him?
The word as the water cooler is this guy is single handedly destroying Ebay.
Always bought stuff off there over many years but never sold anything. Is it hard to do and do you make a decent profit for some side cash.
Or offering a real engine to go with that sexy design. Or bought out for that sexy design by a real company. But most likely the former.
I have both bought and bid over at Ebay and was looking at selling myself. This is not good.
I think the acronym SOTU should be changed to STFU.
Forget it. Donahoe has turned it into the online Mall of China. There is no respect or concern for the kind of sellers who made Ebay a household name. THAT company is long gone.
If you like your Job, you can keep your job.

I’ve never sold, but have bought a few things. I bought a 1935 Dobro that was described as having a straight neck. It wasn’t, and it cost me $200 to fix. But still an okay deal for a rare guitar. I complained, and the sellers cancelled their account and disappeared. I need to sell a lot of collectable guitars and amps though, and ebay seems to be the only way to reach the market.

Any time the enemedia touts the stock market as evidence of “recovery”, understand what exactly moves stock prices. Cutting American jobs (either due to technology or because they are shipping them over to bolster Asia’s middle class) is a great way to boost stock price. The stock market is NOT an indicator of the financial well-being of the avergae American.
bh0 has now established that his mentioning ‘successes’ in the SOTU address is a guarantee that the company will be laying off or closing completely within a couple of months afterward.

That kind of thing used to happen, but in recent years eBay has really upped buyer protections. If you have something like that happen now, I believe eBay would make it right.

I tried that but foolishly included a pic so I had no bidders...
;)
I stopped doing eBay years ago when they put disastrous policies in place which hurt sellers - and favored buyers. Sellers got ripped off right and left - would complain they received a defective product - send it back to the seller for a refund, except they would send an empty box - keep the refund and the product. You weren’t allowed to give any negatives to buyers either, but they would lie about the sellers. It went down the crapper years ago. I made good money at one time before that dweeb became the CEO - now I understand - he is a Demoncrat - No business sense at all. Most are using Amazon now - much more reputable company to deal with.
