The exodus of Jewish Americans from the Democratic Party continued in 2014, with only 61 percent of Jews identifying with the party last year, according to a new poll released Tuesday by Gallup.
Sixty-one percent may seem high, compared to 31 percent of the general public who identify as Democrats, but that’s a 3 percent dip from 2013, and a huge drop from 2008, when 71 percent of Jews said they were Democrats.
The Democrats’ loss is the GOP’s gain. In 2014, 29 percent of Jews said they were Republicans, up 1 percent from 2013 and a 7 percent rise from 2008.
The changing attitudes of Jews don’t simply reflect shifts in the American electorate since 2008, as their shift towards Republicans and away from Democrats substantially outpaces any movements by America at large.

I have to ask, what is it with self hating Jews? I mean, being a Democrat means having to hate Israel, hate capitalism, hate hard work, etc.
Dems lost 3%; GOP gained 1%. Maybe the 2% felt the Dems weren’t left wing enough...

Most Jews live in the major cities which are bastians of the hard left statists. I think their politics are a reflection of where they grew up and the leftist educational establisment.
Jewish or not, almost all media and Hollywood personalities are left-wing, mainly because of the unstable nature of these professions, in the catbird seat one day and "who?" the next.
The unfortunate thing is that Asians, while not as Democratic, are following in their footsteps, for the same reasons.

When I worked for an Israeli company in the US I attended many social gatherings. At one a Jewish woman told me, “(George W.) Bush has been so good to Israel.” A moment later she lamented that, “Bush is such an idiot!” I think that was in regards to GWB not being a liberal or supporting liberal causes. (Actually, he did some liberal Looney things towards the end especially, like killing capitalism to save it or whatever his excuse was for TARP.)My point is, they may not identify as Democrats anymore, but they, at least the ones I knew, were screaming liberals. They won’t vote Republican. The most we can expect is that they don’t vote.
Ted Cruz with his steadfast support of Israel and his outreach to the Jewish community likely has a lot to do with this. If only other Republicans had Ted’s foresight and charisma.
It's a complex. Prior to the Enlightenment, religion was felt to be bound up with the sovereign. If your religion was different from his, that was a potential focal point for unrest and armed revolt. Many rulers winked at persecutions of minority sects for this reason. People of different religions weren't persecuted out of existence - they converted and were then left alone. That's how the Middle East, which was pantheistic, Christian and Jewish before Muhammad, gradually came to embrace Islam. Except during Hitler's reign of terror, Judaism wasn't uniquely persecuted.
In America leftism trumps their religion.

They should feel comfortable in the republican party there is hardly any difference beyond the spelling.
They do not know there is now a one party system; the republican party died from suffering a long terminal illness on 1/6/15, and they are now associating with a perfumed soaked decaying corpse, it will take time but they will eventually recognize as the perfume wears away, the distinct odor the rotting stench of a dead political body so familiar when they were democrats.
I heard Jackie Mason explain why so many Jews are Democrats. He claims it is because they feel guilty about their success and so they buy into wealth redistribution schemes. Also, he says, many are Marxists and they place Marxism above Judiasm.
It’s sad really but it looks like things may be starting to change.

In my area if they’re Union Workers they see they have no choice but to support what the Unions tell them.
