Could bulletproof glass have saved NYPD Officers?
Fox News ^ | 23 DEC 2014 | Fox News

Technology breakthroughs in protective armor for vehicles is driving down the otherwise expensive proposition of outfitting police cruisers for a higher degree of protection against street attacks. The latest in ballistic glass called “transparent armor” weighs less and can stop more bullets from penetrating when installed on a police cruiser. The NYPD has a estimated fleet count of 8,200 police cruisers. At an approximate cost of $12-18K per vehicle for a 360 degree armored protection, the cost would range between $98M to $147M for the entire fleet of police cruisers.

I'm watching this on Fox News right now...

As a former LE Officer - both civilian and military - I am concerned with the heightened cost of doing this.

As a former civilian contractor working for Blackwater in Iraq - I know that glass alone cannot save the occupants inside - additionally, once you step out of the vehicle - one is prone to attack.

All this does is separate the officer from the public - it also adds shielding between the civilian population and strengthens LE response - meaning, it's a militarization of the civilian police force. I find it odd that these officers were killed by a jihadi inspired attackers and this business is attempting to make profit off of it where the govt could use it against the population.

The attacker could have asked the 2 officers to help him and got them out of the car - then shot them...this glass doesn't prevent anything in that manner -- to prevent this people like Holder and Sharpton need to stay quiet and not rally violent responses to their own agenda...

once the windows are armored - then the whole door - then the undercarrage - then what's next...a fully armored tactical vehicle...really???!!!???

It is muck cheaper and effective to just shoot and kill the thugs on the street.

Bullet proof glass also adds a false sense of security.

If someone wants to kill police officers, neither the law nor security enhancements is going to stop them.

Police officers had better be prepared to open fire.

Like I said, if they’re not going to secure their own lives, they have no business being in law enforcement.

If you want absolute safety, sorry, that isn’t your line of work.

Increasing police militarization over the deaths of these officers would be a quite unspeakable travesty. It’s exactly what people like De Blasio and Obama would want.

Don’t police properly patrol areas with their windows DOWN so that they can use at least two of their senses in executing their duties?

It never fails. The people who scream the loudest about it are always the ones who do the most to justify it.

Cellphones have better protection, with gorilla glass.

That technology should be investigated. In mass production, it might be less costly and offer a high (not 100%) level of protection.

Robots don’t need armor nor do they need to shoot people, children, or canine family members to protect a life they don’t have. They don’t need sleep, medical care, pensions, unions, donuts, and they don’t vote Democrat. The software isn’t there yet due to the lack of engineers working on it but robots can be remotely operated by humans for now. The police have so much electronics and high tech equipment now they are already half robot as it is.

Guns aren’t allowed so why bullet proof glass? Criminals should be made aware that having a gun is very bad. Perhaps sensitivity classes for criminals? Or tolerance classes? Diversity classes? Free “Coexist” bumper stickers?

I watched that same segment myself. My first thought was- ok, the shooter fired 3 times at the window with the AK- impressive. Then I wondered, what about the rest of the mag? Methinks the segment was designed to sell a product....

Muslims out, no exceptions. Until such time as Islam is clearly reformed, it remains an implacable foe of freedom and liberty, and is not compatible with democracy.

Separation is the only answer.

Police murder is a social problem, not a technological problem.

I disagree.

The guy was a Black Muslim which is endemic in the black prison community. He was more mentally ill than a proponent of Islam. He killed in the name of Islam, but there was absolutely nothing in his lifestyle to say he was a devout Muslim.

Bull. Gorilla glass is just a tempered glass. It is hard for scratch resistance, but it shatters. You need something like polycarbonate for bullets/

I wonder if Corning has tried to layer gorilla glass up to windshield thickness? That’s one segment of the civilian market that needs stronger glass.
