The nation's oldest black college, Cheyney University, one of Pennsylvania's 14 state-run universities, is on the verge of a financial meltdown that threatens its ability to continue operating, a state official said on Wednesday.
Cheyney's student body has shrunk by two-thirds, to about 1,000, since its 1983 peak, and its four-year graduation rate is just 9 percent. A quarter of students never receive a degree, and student loan defaults are high.

Yes, but one of the primary reasons in my opinion was to give a formal name to those entities that could be the sole focus of government contracting set-asides.
Something change, something different?
No.
“Cheyney University, one of Pennsylvania’s 14 state-run universities”...........
I will bet 100-1 that any other state sponsored university will close BEFORE this one closes.
Sorry about that.
I could not remember the name of the school and was too lazy to look it up before posting...
I think I see the problem...............
Oh, I got what you intended - clearly....I was just providing another clue that would indicate Obama for the ones here who don’t know his education. :0)
Make such affordable engineering schools available to all students including adults... and we will again unleash the power of this great country - it’s great people.
Its four-year graduation rate is 9% (from the article). But it’s a black college. I wonder how it would fare in Obama’s new rating scheme?
I’m sure Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson will each make a sizable from their personal bank account to help them out.
Nothing to worry about. 0 and his buddies will make sure they get a bundle of taxpayer money.
Not to worry, incoming Governor Tom Wolf will no doubt throw a few hundred million of my tax dollars at them to keep this from happening.
To do otherwise would be RAAAAAAACIST, of course.
Howard and Hampton University (in Virginia) are two of the more successful HBCUs. Both have solid academic reputations and they’ve been creative in developing additional revenue streams for the institution. Howard owns WHUR-FM, one of few commercial radio stations owned by a college or university, and it’s always near the top of the ratings in Washington, D.C.
Hampton operates a proton therapy institute that attracts thousands of cancer patients each year and they were the first HBCU to open a pharmacy school. The great irony is that most African-American students, as products of “government schools” can’t meet admission standards. So, white and Asian students make up about 50-60% of each incoming pharmacy class. Hampton is happy to have them as students (tuition is $30K a year) and alumni who can give back to the institution.
Admittedly, I don’t spend much time on the Hampton campus, but I’ve never heard anyone at the school—black or white—complain about the disproportionate number of white students in the pharmacy program.
See? Problem solved.
Have to say, I have spoken with a number of exceptionally sharp, bright, impressive Howard grads.
I think this article is wrong. If the 4 year graduation rate is only 9%, I would thing 75% never get a degree (not 25%). Actually, most schools would beam if 75% of their students eventually got degrees. I think the average is between 50-60%.
I remember another Black college, Central State University in Ohio—another disaster that eventually shut down.
All Black colleges had a place once, but now they are an anachronism.
But their students receive the best indoctrination in White Privilege that borrowed money can buy.
Perhaps some of its famous alumni, which apparently include NFL players, can shore this school up.
On a serious note, I think that the era of separate historically black colleges has about run its course. Those, of whatever race, who are qualified are admitted to schools, based upon their abilities and aptitude. There are a number of HBC’s in North Carolina, and many are facing gradual degradation if they remain all black. NC A&T is majority black enrolled, but it is a quality institution and many non-blacks attend. The same goes for Winston-Salem State University (I live in that are). But other schools, Fayetteville State and NC Central, among others, are not doing as well. There needs to be a transition from viewing these schools as “black universities” to something else, but I don’t know how it should be described. We have the flagship state schools such as UNC Chapel Hill and NC State (where my son attended), and then there is perhaps a slight drop to schools such as Appalachian State (where my daughter is currently in grad school). The “black schools” may have to take their place among these schools, if they wish to survive.
A lot of colleges in Pennsylvania are state funded or affiliated. There is the PASSHE system (which Cheney is a part of), but also Penn State and the University of Pittsburg. There ways well be some others I’m not aware of. In any case, the PA state university system is a bloated mess. Closing Cheney would be an act of mercy, but yeah, bet they won’t do it ‘cause it would look racist.
Will anybody do a study as to the reasons why Blacks only have a 9% graduation rate?
A full study, not one of those pick and choose data cleansing sessions.
