Will, who once taught political philosophy at Michigan State, said he is “still a Spartan who takes equal pleasure from good MSU football seasons and dismal ones in Ann Arbor,” referring to the University of Michigan. Connie Rzemien, whose daughter, Katie, was among those graduating, told The Detroit News she thought Will was not the right choice. “I believe it is contradictory to what they are doing here to have somebody with such an insensitive view of rape to speak today,” she said. “I think it’s insulting to young women.” The U.S. Education Department this year revealed a list of dozens of colleges under investigation for the way they handle sexual abuse allegations, and Michigan State was among them. University officials created a task force to identify ways to reduce sexual violence and misconduct as well as increase reporting when it happens. University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan spoke Friday. The institution had faced outrage after a Rolling Stone article about a gang rape at a fraternity house that wasn’t prosecuted, though the magazine later said it couldn’t stand by its reporting because of discrepancies. Sullivan has said the university’s long-held concerns about sexual assault and alcohol use were heightened by the article.

So, according to the Washington Post’s most able reporting, the most important aspect of this event was not that students were graduating with college degrees, and it was not that an American right-of-center thinker who loves baseball and has raised a Down’s Syndrome child to adulthood was privileged with presenting the commencement address, but that a few dozen protestors disliked comments he made about sexual assault in the face of rape hoaxes? Even Katharine Graham must be spinning in her grave.
The amazing thing here is that the students were protesting George Will’s June 6th article about victimhood. The UVA president even mention the fake story in her speech to change the law.
Here’s a suggestion:
Why don’t you ask the young women who were never raped during their time at MSU to contribute what they did to avoid sexual assault.
For my daughter (MSU-2006), it was
(1) choosing your friends wisely; pick those who will not hesitate to help you.
(2) avoiding gatherings where drinking is the primary feature.
(3) going to bed early; nothing good ever happens after midnight.
(4) situational awareness: when traveling campus after dark and not traveling alone.
(5) situational awareness: understanding your personal protection options (AKA: multiple keys on a lanyard).
Of the 5, #1 is the most important followed closely by #2.
Nota Bene: this list will be different for (a) heterosexual males and (b) homosexual males.
Rape exists—and merits the death penalty, in my opinion. But it's statistically rarer on U.S. college campuses than almost anywhere else on earth.
That's not to say that what goes on at these campuses is good. There's something very bad going on. In their weird, insincere way, these gals are onto it, but don't know how to talk about it, and don't want to face up to their own part in it. Do you get the feeling that they wouldn't be talking so strangely if they had resolved what it means to exercise personal virtue?
I think George Will’s June 6th column sums up the whole issue perfectly.
Back in the morning of my life, while at MSU, there was a constant drumbeat about how much rape there was on campus.
The student enrollment at that time was around 45,000, I doubt it has changed much, lots of overhead has to be maintained.
To my knowledge, I never knew anyone who was raped, or knew anyone who knew anyone who was raped. There were news stories (nameless victims, or women who were not raped because they fought back) like, when MSU instituted an after-hours bus service that took everyone who wanted a ride when the main library closed for free to each and every dorm on campus, the bus driver (not a student) reportedly raped one of the passengers.
Just as with the latest agitprop in the Rolling Stone, there’s no good reason to believe any of those news stories were anything but made up. My favorite fake statistic is, that rape is underreported. Try to disprove that one, willya? “We don’t have any figures, or names or anything, or even forensic evidence, you’ll just have to take our word for it, just as you should always believe the rape victim.”
Those five suggestions look spot on to me.
And of course, the radical reply to it would take the form of, there’s no reason why she should have to blah blah blah...
I bet this Connie Rzemien has no idea what George Will's view of "rape" is. I bet she doesn't know anything about the "rape" statistics, much less that they are artificially inflated. She hears that someone "questioned" something about "rape" and that's all she needs to join the unthinking crowd that brainlessly parrots back that he is insensitive and the wrong choice.
Ann Arbor was a ZOO back in the sixties as I remember it.

I lived there from 1968 through 1970...
work stopped....I left.
2 or 3 years back UofM had a “non partisan” seminar titled “The republican war on women”.
Rules for living by.
nothing about that “community” has been non partisan since at least the sixties

These rules are what she walked away from Moo-U with. I guess I just raised her right!
She could be a advocate for incoming “femme-de-frosh” but...MSU couldn’t care less about ^abstinence^ coupled with situational awareness.
Situational awareness leads to open/concealed carry on campus and you know how THAT goes...
Oh, and full disclosure: she did not carry in any way for the 4 years she was at MichState.
Actually, I have a difficult time convincing her of her need to have a firearm handy in SoFLA. She is hopolophobic in a minor way.
While a gun works best, there are plenty of ways to stay fairly safe without.
