Ted Cruz: Return to foreign policy of Reagan - Appears to have eye on 2016 in Heritage speech

WASHINGTON – In a speech at the Heritage Foundation on Wednesday that sounded like the first foreign policy address of a presidential campaign, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called for a return to the international politics of President Ronald Reagan.

Cruz contrasted Reagan’s approach with the Obama-Clinton policy of not putting distance between the U.S. and traditional allies, such as Britain and Israel, in the hope of “domesticating” long-standing enemies such as Russia and Iran.

“This backfired,” Cruz argued. “The end result is that Churchill is no longer welcome in the Oval Office.

He recalled one of Obama’s first acts in office was to return to Britain a bust of Winston Churchill that had been on long-term loan.

Cruz objected to the moral equivalence he sees as central to the Obama-Clinton foreign policy.

“In the foreign policy of President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, all nations are equal and should be treated with respect and empathy, regardless whether they are friends or enemies,” he said.

“Let me be very clear,” Cruz objected. “When it comes to dealing with radical Islamic terrorists who are crucifying Christians and beheading children, what our foreign policy needs is not additional empathy. It needs clarity, force and resolve to defend the United States of America.”(continued)

Good luck with that.

“...in the hope of “domesticating” long-standing enemies such as Russia and Iran.”

Might as well wish for the UN to disband on its own. Or North Korea to become a true Republic. Or Nancy Pelosi to become pro-life.

It's one of the tragedies of obama, for having been given the opportunity to acquire one of the best educations other people's money could buy, he didn't assimilate anything from the painful lessons learned by real American citizen patriots that came before him.

If the U.S. pulled out, it would.

Yeah, but how likely is that to happen? Really?

Reagan foreign policy was based on facing down the existential threat of the USSR.

Since the US faces nothing similar, it is IMO a little silly to talk about returning to Reagan’s foreign policy.

I’m sure Reagan himself would be the first to agree that different challenges require different policies.

The existential threat we face is there IMO.

“When it comes to dealing with radical Islamic terrorists who are crucifying Christians and beheading children, what our foreign policy needs is not additional empathy. It needs clarity, force and resolve to defend the United States of America.”

It's clarity, force, and resolve he wants to replicate - not tearing down the berlin wall.

It's not silly at all.

Of course times have changed, but a foreign policy based on strength and consistency is what Cruz is talking about, and that was the basis of Reagan's policy.

What we have now is a foreign policy of weakness, apology, "flexibility", and lies, and that isn't working at all.

I cannot wait to vote for him in the primary against whatever RINO the leftist media and GOPE selects as our candidate.

What do you call Putin’s attack on Ukraine? The USSR still exists with another name.

I still say; I hope he’s running because that’s the only one I’ll vote for in 2016. If I have to, I’ll write in his name.

Rick Perry might be okay, if I could be sure he would appoint Cruz to be Attorney General; giving Cruz and Gowdy the opportunity to clean up the mess at Justice and the IRS.

On the subject of Cruz...... why all this talk of President. He is not only a Senator, but a very good senator.

He has taken the initiative to lead towards forwarding the conservative agenda. He is a legislator, not an executive.

The country is much better served by his leadership in the Senate than as president where he lacks proven executive knowledge or ability.

We are experiencing the failure of one neophyte senator in the Oval Office over his head. We need not make that error again so soon.

We need a governor as president

Hmmmm ..?? Let me guess .. you want either Jeb Bush or Chris Christie. Right ..??

Well, good luck with that.

I want Cruz because of his MINDSET. He not only believes in America (and her founding principals), he believes in the CITIZENS of America. And .. I believe “executive” experience can be found in a Solicitor General (where you run an organization of attorneys); especially a Solicitor General as successful as Ted Cruz.

The fact that you would dare to compare the current President (as a former terrible Senator), to Ted Cruz as a Senator .. just boggles the mind.

No..... of course not

I like Rick Perry. He is a warrior to go to battle and draw blood

I also like Scott Walker

I also like John Kasich

It is your catalogue of virtues that feeds my belief that Cruz can do our conservative cause the most good in the Senate

The essence of Reagan’s foreign policy has been summed up as “peace through strength”. If this were adopted by a future administration, it would indeed represent a “return”.

This president of the future may have a weapon at his disposal that Reagan didn’t have, to accomplish this goal—oil.

On the subject of Cruz...... why all this talk of President.

Because 2016 is arguably America's last chance. We need to win this one with the right candidate.

How is that even possible?

What got Obola elected was the fact that he was able to inspire the voters, and that got them out the door to vote. He created an atmosphere of excitement, of vision, of promise for a better future.

Obviously, he was a complete phony, and all the hope'n'change rhetoric was just a scam, but it worked to get him elected.

Given the Rat registration advantages, their vote fraud apparatus, and their superior ground game, the Republicans need something better than another dull faceless bureaucrat.

Bush I, Bush II, Dole, McCain, and Romney were simply dull candidates that didn't generate any excitement at all.

I believe that Cruz can do what Obola did, not by lying to the people, but by telling the truth, and expressing his principles clearly as a matter of common sense.

The Reagan Democrats are not gone, they are just sleeping. Cruz will waken them again. Perry, Walker, and Kasich, in my opinion, cannot do that.
