Sales of leases on 8.1 million acres of federal oil and gas parcels an area larger than Massachusetts and Rhode Island combined are on hold because of worries that drilling could harm greater sage grouse... the U.S. Bureau of Land Managements delay on the parcels underscores just how much is at stake for an industry that finds its future inextricably intertwined with a bird once known primarily for its elaborate mating display.
The grouses huge range, covering portions of 11 states and an area more than four times as big as New England, includes vast oil, gas and coal reserves and the best type of windy, open country for developing wind power.
Were not real happy about it. Its not even an endangered species
...
Sage grouse receive frequent comparisons to the Northern spotted owl, another imperiled bird that stirred a fight over logging

They act like a drilling rig and well will be spaced every 50 feet or so. There won’t be that many of them compared to the size of the bird’s range.
This is the same stupid argument they made about the Alaskan pipeline hurting or destroying the Caribou migration routes.
Wrong then : Wrong now.
We’re talking about thousands of square miles, and a drilling pad takes 10 acres tops. A square mile is 640 acres.
I can’t see the problem here.
What the enviros never mention is, oil and gas have a far smaller footprint than wind and solar.
Birds are not stupid. They will adapt and thrive. Probably wind up with more sage grouse that there is now..................
The real issue is not about a bird.
Chicken farmers could likely raise millions of these birds.
Guess the real issue.
UN Agenda 21 ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
Ahhh, so this is how they plan to control the Wild West, the fracking, the cowboys. hmmmmm.
I'm waiting for Obama to take credit for the current low gas prices.
Save a roughneck, eat a sage hen.
For being such a endangered bird, I see a tremendous amount of them all through central to northern Nevada. They are almost as common as bunny rabbits.
Grouse deserve to be treated well. I find that putting some bacon on top, before popping them in the oven, helps keep them nice and juicy.
INTERESTING, the US gov. permits the abortion of human beings, yet wants to save the life of sage grouse.
Apparently, grouse are more important than human beings.
Exactly, and it saves the trouble of constant basting.
They’ll stop drilling, but not stop wind farms, for birds.
Hmmmm.
We have some Sage Grouse around here on the western slope. Have to watch for them during Grouse season as they are protected.
The favorite grouse hang out when they are mating is under a big walkie-talkie repeater for the local firemen. It reflects signals so they can talk across the hills during wildfires. It looks like a small drive-in theater screen on a grassy knob. Manmade structures either attract them or don’t bother them, how about that?
"I don't see any grouse."
Tyson or Foster farms, please pick up the contract phone.
Species come...species go. Don’t mess with Nature you enviro-nuts.
Also, I am a partner on 38 acres of mineral rights currently producing nat gas in Texas. There is nothing visible on the land. The wellhead is on a 2 acre site with 4 other wellheads about 3/10 of a mile away, across a highway. The pay hole runs horizontally through 18 different property/mineral right owners for several miles.
