Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that the Americas were discovered by Muslims in the 12th century, nearly three centuries before Christopher Columbus set foot there.

"Contacts between Latin America and Islam date back to the 12th century. Muslims discovered America in 1178, not Christopher Columbus," the conservative president said in a televised speech during an Istanbul summit of Muslim leaders from Latin America.

"Muslim sailors arrived in America from 1178. Columbus mentioned the existence of a mosque on a hill on the Cuban coast," Erdogan said.

Actually left and right in most of the world have little bearing on things. Outside of the english speaking world, most “right wingers” are to the left of our leftwingers.

Actually the Vikings were there even earlier, 1000 AD via Greenland (the world was much warmer then) - and the proof is documented by archaeological digs in northern Newfoundland.

“Columbus mentioned the existence of a mosque on a hill on the Cuban coast,” Erdogan said.

LIAR!

“During his initial voyage to America, Columbus saw a hill on the Cuban coast and said it resembled “a beautiful mosque”. (Columbus: His life, His works and His remains, p. 554.”

Krazy ass, pedophiles and rapists.

For all the things you say your religion has discovered, why is it you live in the 7th century?

Old Chris not only discovered the Americas but, he brought back a compelling record of his voyage that caused other nations to go in search of this marvelous side of the world, heretofore, unknown.

So you were keeping it a secret?

Blow it out yer keester...

Back in the early 60s there was a book They All Discovered America by Charles Michael Boland

From one of the reviews on Amazon:

Stone ruins in New Hampshire from the Bronze Age... Carthaginian coins on Mid-Atlantic islands... Phoenician inscriptions on rocks in Pennsylvania... Roman coins in Venezuela... rumors of bronze shields, daggers and swords... these are just a few of the clues which testify to the fact that many people came to this hemisphere long before Columbus!

In the tradition of the great mystery writers, the author of this absorbing book has woven fact, myth and theory into the adventures of nineteen groups of explorers, including Chinese, Irish, Vikings, Portuguese and Romans.

And maybe it's all true, but so what? Columbus "published" first, so he deservedly gets the credit. Hooray for Western Civ, and down with Islam.

Just like they teach that the Jews stole Israel from the Arabs.
The propaganda begins.

Columbus first voyage journal...

A geological feature is now a mosque... What else could it be...?

Remarking on the position of the river and port, to which he gave the name of San Salvador, he describes its mountains as lofty and beautiful, like the Pena de las Enamoradas, and one of them has another little hill on its summit, like a graceful mosque. The other river and port, in which he now was, has two round mountains to the S.W., and a fine low cape running out to the W.S.W.

That quote is apparently the thing upon which Erdogan bases his fabrication.

It is possible that a covert Muslim or a few of them were in Columbus’ crews. Most of his men were recruited in Andalusia after all. Its known that a few were Jewish (well, ex-Jews).
And there is no doubt at all that a few were black Africans, who possibly were former Muslims.

Muslims probably didn’t discover EITHER America or Columbus in 1178 A.D.

The reason Columbus sailed west was to open a trade rout to bypass the Muslims. Their general corruption, theft, and slaving virtually shut down trade between Europe and Asia. If they had reached America first the world would still be in the dark ages.

Reminds me of when I read those claims of the Soviet Communists who said they invented everything. This made for joking comments such as “Soviet watches are the fastest in the world” and “Russia is the elephants natural habitat.”

It could be said that Leif Erickson and the Indians landed in America, but Columbus discovered America for Europe and for us. Columbus is the one who's discovery is most significant.

I'd like to I heard a historian on the late David Brudnoy Radio show that said that was not so.
