Unless they’re operating from Latin American bases, that’s a lot of avgas to spend on an ongoing meaningless stunt. It’s not exactly going to help the case of all the pan-Slavics, Russian co-ethnics and apologists stateside.

Based out of where? Russia doesn’t have a bomber capable of patrolling the Gulf of Mexico if it has to come all the way from Russia. Cuba isn’t going to go for it and Hugo Chavez is still dead.

There is an international agreement to do recon. I think it originated with Eisenhower.

This is part of the Open Skies Treaty. We do it, too.

Hmmm... in the tradition of failing powers we COULD hire the Russians to defend our borders
It would leave us more money for Bread and Circus to boot.
If Mexico had any problems with how the Russians did it they could take it up with them. Our hands would be clean LOL!

I guess I’m just an old, crusty fossil who remembers when the Monroe Doctrine still carried weight with foreign powers. When was it cancelled? I also think the Gulf of Mexico should be an American lake. But that’s just silly ol’ me.

In the current situation we have to maintain military presence in the western Atlantic and eastern Pacific, as well as the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico,
What, specifically, would be the nature of this “current situation?” Is Putin undertaking to police the near-shore waters of the U.S.A.? How flattering, that he be so concerned for our safety and welfare.
