Russia to send bombers on Gulf of Mexico ‘reconnaissance missions’

A top Russian official said Wednesday the country plans on conducting patrols with its bombers that extend into the Gulf of Mexico.

“In the current situation we have to maintain military presence in the western Atlantic and eastern Pacific, as well as the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday in Moscow, The Associated Press reported.

The Russian official did not provide specifics on the patrols, but said planes will conduct “reconnaissance missions to monitor foreign powers’ military activities and maritime communications,” AP reported.

Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, told AP he would not characterize Russia’s actions as a provocation, as the nation has a right to operate in international airspace.

Unless they’re operating from Latin American bases, that’s a lot of avgas to spend on an ongoing meaningless stunt. It’s not exactly going to help the case of all the pan-Slavics, Russian co-ethnics and apologists stateside.

A president with gonads would announce unscheduled tests of our air defense missiles in the GOM.

Based out of where? Russia doesn’t have a bomber capable of patrolling the Gulf of Mexico if it has to come all the way from Russia. Cuba isn’t going to go for it and Hugo Chavez is still dead.

And I thank God he did not win. That “other guy” the “lesser of two evils” is Obama with an R behind his name.

It’s working great. He wants ANY excuse to declare martial law and remain king of the us caliphate.

There is an international agreement to do recon. I think it originated with Eisenhower.

"And I thank God he did not win. That “other guy” the “lesser of two evils” is Obama with an R behind his name."

A tad hyperbolic, wouldn't you say? I would take a flawed president who at least loved his country over one bound and determined to destroy it at every turn.

We sure ended up benefiting from all those "principled" conservatives who stayed home last election, huh?

We do the same. Should they shoot down ours?

You really seem to have a hard on for a war with Russia.

“shoot them down , smoke um & splash um”

We have a lot of unarmed planes regularly patrolling near Russian and Chinese airspace. The Russians use their bombers as air recon. The most we should do is jam them, and I’d advise against that as it reveals our jamming capacity. So, if they get close, intercept and escort. If they stay outside the line (whatever that is today) then keep an eye on them. Shoot down...not a game we should play as we have too much to lose.
