The November 17 edition of People magazine includes a promotional article for Timothy Shrivers new book Fully Alive, focusing on The Forgotten Kennedy, the lobotomized Rosemary Kennedy, sister to Jack, Bobby and Teddy.
"Why are we hiding from this story?" he asked himself, according to Peoples Liz ONeil. "There's nothing to fear here. It's a human story. It's a heroic story. Heroically lobotomized and institutionalized? Apparently, this fiasco was the true inspiration for his famous familys love of service.

What’s with the constant rehabilitation of the images of the Kennedy family? Someone must want to run for office in 2016.
I just wish that they would stop with the ‘mental retardation’ fiction. Rosemary might have had some mild learning disabilities, but the biggie was that she was most likely beginning to signs of schizophrenia, and was beginning to act out sexually-running around, sneaking out to be with men.
There are stories of men who danced with Rosemary at parties while they were in England, and they all said while she was quieter & more withdrawn than her siblings, she was perfectly able to fully function (converse, dance) in the strict society of 1930’s England.
Joe Kennedy Sr. was such an evil scumbag he decided in incapacitate his daughter rather than have her risk embarrassing the family & destroying their (already) questionable reputation.
I read somewhere that Joe pounced on a day when Rose wasn’t home and that poor Rosemary had an idea of what was going to happen to her and was taken from the house screaming. It must have terrified the other girls. Oddly enough, according to actress Gloria Swanson, one of the reasons why she ended her relationship with Joe Kennedy was her discomfort about his attitude towards Rosemary.
There is little that Joe could do which surprise me. He was one of the richest men in America. You would think at the very least he could afford to hire some chaperones and bodyguards to protect Rosemary from being taken advantage of.
Gloria Swanson should have had the good sense not get involved with a married man to begin with. I believe Gloria, too, was married at the time she began her affair with Joe, making it doubly immoral and repulsive.
I grew up in a dem family that idolized the Kennedys...and it started with the handsome John F Kennedy...
being a democrat in family was more of a branding issue. When I asked my parents why we were democrats, they stated because democrats are kind and they believe in helping people.
for my mother I am certain it was due to his good looks.
I have since learned just how much of a creep the father was... and how the press covered up for all the mis-deeds of this family..
all because of the handsome Jack... sounds like someone we know.
It pleases me to think that Joe burns in Hell for his horrible deeds....as does Teddy, Bobby, and Jack.
People think that lobotomy is some sort of precision brain surgery. It isn't. Or, at least, it wasn't in Rosemary's time. The procedure, called ice-pick lobotomy, was to take a metal rod like a knitting needle, push the eyeball out of the way, and shove the rod through the back of the eye socket and into the frontal lobe of the brain. Then, wrench the rod around so as to stir the lobal material into mush.
My own theory on this sad saga is Joe Kennedy raped his daughter and had her lobotomized to shut her up.
And why is that my theory? Nothing more than Joe was a nasty, remorseless criminal whose evil passed quite smoothly to at least three of his sons.
Love of service? Wrong. Love of power.
If you were to look at the Kennddy Boys and their labido’s ole Joe may have felt it necessary to shut Rosemary up.
Rosemary was hidden away in St. Coletta’s School in southern Wisconsin, where she received custodial care.
I have driven past that place more than a few times, ever reminded of the sad fate of that poor girl.
The truth is Rosemary was born normally. She had some learning difficulties, but could do math - long division and algebra.
Her main problem was that she was not athletically coordinated and became frustrated when she could not keep up with all the other athletic Kennedy's.
Her father saw her inadequacies as imperfections that he could not bear.
So, he got a doctor to "fix" the problem, which left her worse off and unable to care for herself.
If you want to know the truth about Rosemary then read "Sins of the Father" by Ronald Kessler.
In typical liberal fashion, “It isn’t broken, let’s fix it.”
They were extremely religious within their church and were rewarded greatly for it, as the most famous Catholics in America and being adorned with ceremonies and recognition and personal treatment.
This barbaric procedure was performed on my maternal grandmother in the 1940’s. It left her child like for the rest of her long life. I’m not sure why it was done but she was “delicate” according to relatives. I have always thought my grandfather had it done for some (probably selfish) reason. He was a real bastard.
Apparently he had no problem with his sons promiscuity.
(((
Or his own.
JFK was not handsome. He had nice hair and a pleasant smile, but he was not handsome.
Teddy was actually very good looking as a young man.
Or his own, like bringing his mistress home to the family dinner table and expecting Rose to put up with it
The one story that I know, reported in Gloria’s autobiography.
Joe set sail one year for Europe taking both Gloria and Rose with him. While it was obvious Gloria was his mistress, Rose was at all times gracious and dignified about it, showing no signs of pain or humiliation.
Swanson wrote that Rose was either a fool or simply a better actress than she was.
Joe was certainly among the lowest of all low-lifes imaginable. Too bad most of the kids took more after him than her.
