Silicon Valley Company Caught Paying Foreign Workers $1.21/Hr After $200M Quarter
Breitbart ^ | 24 Oct 2014 | Tony Lee

A Silicon Valley tech company that reportedly made $200 million last quarter was importing foreign workers from India and paying them $1.21 an hour.

According to the Labor Department, "about eight employees of Fremont-based Electronics For Imaging [EFI] were flown in from India and worked 120-hour weeks to help with the installation of computers at the company's headquarters." NBC Bay Area noted that "the employees were paid their regular hourly wage in Indian rupees, which translated to $1.21."

EFI claimed it "unintentionally overlooked laws that require even foreign employees to be paid based on local US standards." The company reportedly must pay "$40,000 in back wages to the employees" and was fined $3,500.

According to NBC Bay Area, another tech company last year "faced similar charges and was fined for underpaying employees from Mexico an hourly wage of $2.66," and "federal officials said both cases are particularly egregious, given the booming labor market and the wealth in Silicon Valley."

Even though there is a surplus of American high-tech workers, high-tech companies continue to clamor for more guest-worker visas to lower the wages of their workers. Companies like Microsoft have lobbied for massive increases in foreign workers even while laying off 18,000 American workers.

Importing foreign workers pushes wages downward for jobs that are available, which is why H-1B expert and Howard University professor Ron Hira has said that massive increases in guest-worker visas will "cut off" opportunities for more Americans to enter the middle class via tech jobs. Hira has repeatedly emphasized that "people who come from working-class backgrounds" have used technology jobs as a "way of getting into the middle class and the professional class," as Breitbart News has reported.

That’ll learn them.

We should pass a law requiring our multinational corporations to pay foreign workers our prevailing wage rates so we can keep more good-paying jobs here at home.

If they want to off-source jobs, they would get no economic advantage from it. They want to be in this country, they ought to follow our labor and worker safety rules.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the uber-wealthy silicon valley elites backing the open borders/pro-amnesty politicians.

They are doing that because they are great humanitarians, not because they want more cheap labor.

I simply want Americans to be paid a fair wage for a hard day’s work, not forced to see their living standard plunge in a race to the bottom.

And its ethical and in our economic self-interest to preserve our middle class. Rich corporate bigwigs and the open borders crowd don’t wish to preserve America.

The battle is joined.

WHOA -- 17 hours a day, 7 days a week! I can't even stay awake that long.

I wonder if this is one of the Silicon Valley firms that shoves piles of cash in Obama's pockets when we pay to fly him out there for Lunch and golf.

So a minimum of $100,000 as a political donation and a fine of $3500. Not that anyone could dream the 2 are related. Who could imagine that a company would be handled differently because of who they donated to.

A better idea would be to stop taxing money that flows into this country from overseas. If a company makes money abroad, then they should be allowed to bring that money into this country tax free so that it can be invested here. Instead, we discourage these companies from bringing that money home, leaving it sitting in foreign banks instead where it is used for more foreign investment.

And this is part of why illegal “immigration” is such a problem. Our minimum wage laws make hiring unskilled labor cost-prohibitive, but illegal immigrants are more than happy to take the low wages under the table. And our politicians want the political power, so look the other way while American unskilled workers sit idle, learning no job skills.

No one is going to do a good job at anything working 100+ hours a week with six hours of sleep or less.
The quality will be so bad that it takes 10 hours of time by someone making $40 an hour to figure out that flipped switch or assembly error.

These people comes on L1 or B1 visa. There is no limit on number and companies can avoid paying US salaries, they have to pay daily living expenses or provide accommodation.

Check any Extended Stay or Inns in Silicon valley , they are filled with B1 or L1 visa crowd from India or East Europe.
