Cruz: Rich Do Fine with Big Govt, GOP Must Help the Working Poor

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz on Saturday said that to resurrect America's greatness it was necessary to revive the economy, defend the Constitution, and restore America's place in the world arena.

Appearing at the conference themed "America at Its Best," Cruz told more than 3,000 attendees to the Western Conservative Summit in Denver that "the single biggest lie" is that Republicans are the party of the rich.

"The rich have done fine with big government," he said. The ones most hurt by big government are those who are struggling.

The event, in its fifth year, is sponsored by the Centennial Institute, the think tank of Colorado Christian University. It is being held at the Colorado Convention Center and the Hyatt Regency Denver.

Alluding to NSA eavesdropping, Cruz invited the audience to "please leave your cell phones on. I want to make sure President Obama hears every word I say."

He said it seemed as if Obama was "going down the bill of rights trying to violate one at a time."

Cruz said, "We need to defend the Second Amendment" adding that, "In Texas, we define gun control as hitting what you're aiming at."

He said, the 10th amendment defines and limits the powers of the federal government. Washington's power does not extend to education. "I would repeal every word of Common Core. Education should be [decided] at the local level," said Cruz.

Other speakers during the three-day event, which began on Friday, included former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, retired pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson, and Republican Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Tim Scott

"If we must have an enemy at the head of Government, let it be one whom we can oppose, and for whom we are not responsible, who will not involve our party in the disgrace of his foolish and bad measures." - Alexander Hamilton

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended. We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates wouldn’t make any sense at all." -- President Ronald Reagan

"A thing moderately good is not so good as it ought to be. Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice." - Thomas Paine 1792

"It does not take a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men." - Samuel Adams

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams

Does Cruz get that the $4 trillion federal government is AT LEAST 80% too big and unconstitutional?

I don't know, what do you think:

"Ted Cruz: That's not a knife, this is a knife," Cruz said. "We need to eliminate unnecessary and unconstitutional agencies like the Department of Education ... the Department of Commerce, the Department of Energy, the National Endowment of the Arts. ... I would most like to eliminate the Internal Revenue Service."
And another statement by Cruz:
Cruz: I am all for it. We’re in a crisis. Our national debt is larger than our gross domestic product. We are barreling down the road to where Greece and Italy and much of Europe find themselves. And we need serious leadership to stop it. I think we should shrink the size and power of the federal government by every and any means possible. What does that mean?

That means eliminating unnecessary or unconstitutional agencies. The first agency I would eliminate would be the U.S. Department of Education. I think education is far too important to be governed by unelected bureaucrats in Washington. I think it should be at the state level, or even better, at the local level where parents have direct influence over the education of our kids.

I would eliminate the U.S. Department of Commerce. I would eliminate the U.S. Department of Energy. I would eliminate the National Endowment of the Arts. I think the arts are terrific. But I see no reason why unelected bureaucrats spend your and mine tax dollars on arts they happen to like.

And the agency I’d most like to eliminate is the IRS through fundamental tax reform.

Since he wants me to talk to Cruz for him, maybe he wants you to show him how to do internet research.

Sounds like Cruz is talking about crony capitalism. If so, he's right.

Yeah that’s what it sounds like to me. Mike Lee is another who has been very outspoken against cronyism.

Good one Senator! Count me in as being an advocate for ‘gen control’.

Not sure that nasty post was necessary was it? I wasn't even replying to you.

However, I do appreciate what you posted about his comments about cutting government which I hadn't seen before. I hope he's serious about it.

As Alan Dershowitz says of Cruz..."he is off the charts brilliant!"

I think we conservatives can hang our hats here.

He spent a long time talking about crony capitalism last night. He gets it. What a breath of fresh air to hear a serious presidential candidate talking about corporatism explicitly and doing such a nice job of distinguishing “pro-business” from “pro-free-market.”

Great minds think alike. I'd be ecstatic if either of them were the next POTUS.
