The Pentagon is turning to Hollywood developers to come up with body armor prototypes to protect elite U.S. forces, The Wall Street Journal reported. The U.S. Special Operations Command is bypassing the standard contracting system to accelerate the proposal, testing, and evaluation process.
Proposals are coming from the make-believe world that created special effects for such movies as Captain America and Iron Man, as well as experts on genuine medieval body armor. The goal is to come up within four years with suits that would protect special operations forces against bullets, bombs and bayonets.

In May, some of those involved in the effort came together in Vermont for a day to test a prototype they've come up with so far. The partial exoskeleton proved to be far too heavy and unwieldy.
Designers say that the ultimate product is probably not going to look much like the Hollywood versions. Brian Dowling, a former special forces soldier, who is managing the effort for Revision Military in Vermont said: "Will you ever have an Iron Man? I don't know. But you'll have some greatly improved technology along the way."

“That would require a yet-to-be-invented power source.”
In other words dumping a crap ton of money into yet another vaporware project.
Apparently the stuff is amazingly strong, light, and flexible, much better than anything we've got now.
If I heard it right (I was only half listening), they're trying to genetically engineering goats to make it. (Stay out of the pasture.)
Troy Hurtubise should submit something that’s based on his anti-bear armor research.

Expect the finished product to show up first on the no-warrant jack boots.
lmao exactly. Local revenue enforcers can’t wait to get their hands on this.
“TONY STARK BUILT THIS FROM A BOX OF SCRAPS! IN A CAVE!!”
About 5 minutes after we figured out flight we wanted exoskeletons. Nothing really new about the project. And some day it will work.
Gorgeous. Life imitates South Park once again. Michael Bay will want the suit to be extra explodey.
This is just an excuse to pump money into Hollywood.
Their materials experts have no advantage on the defense industry.
Gosh, maybe Gene Roddenberry could have showed them how a warp drive could work.
“If I heard it right (I was only half listening), they’re trying to genetically engineering goats to make it. (Stay out of the pasture.) “
If this doesn’t have the makings of a 1950’s horror movie, I don’t know what does. Just stir in boys with hotrods and incredibly stacked but dumb chicks and add popcorn.
It may be like an atom bomb. Lots of people know how to build one; the problem is getting the enriched uranium and plutonium.
Perfect!
“OH, I broke my heel. Carry me!”
Hollywood body armor?
Pink and vegan first and foremost.
” they’re trying to genetically engineering goats to make it.”
Actually, the goat was to produce a extra protein in the milk that could be used. Project went bankrupt.
They are hurrying really, really fast because they know we’ve got the guns.
Yeah. That’s my point. Hollywood CAN come up with great ideas, but their implementation could be either centuries off or totally impractical.
Still, time travel movies and episodes are my favorite.
I read a science fiction book called Golden Globe where genetically engineered giant spiders spun the superstructure of space stations in place. That’s doable, I believe.
