Dem to Help Plan State-Led Revisions to U.S. Constitution
Northwest Indiana Times ^ | June 8th, 2014 | Dan Carden

Posted on 06/12/2014 5:10:40 AM PDT by Jacquerie

State Sen. Jim Arnold, D-LaPorte, will join some 105 delegates from 33 states at the Indiana Statehouse on Thursday and Friday for the second meeting of the Convention of the States planning group dubbed The Mount Vernon Assembly.

Arnold did not attend the group's first session in December at George Washington's Virginia estate, but said he jumped at the chance to participate this time when Senate President David Long, R-Fort Wayne, an organizer of the planning group, asked Arnold to join him and state Rep. Ben Smaltz, R-Auburn, as Indiana's delegation.

However, because an Article V convention never has been called, there are no clear procedures on how it would begin, what rules the convention would follow or whether it could be limited in scope.

Long said The Mount Vernon Assembly is focused on putting a parliamentary structure in place for a Convention of the States, "so that we can have consensus on how this thing is going to be run" prior to Congress authorizing the convention.

"Without this structure, it won't work," Long said.

Arnold said many Hoosier legislators and lawmakers in other states agree that something must be done to bring the federal government under control, and a Convention of the States just might be it.

"There's a lot of unhappiness out there, on both sides, about out-of-control spending in Washington, mandates Washington makes on states, bureaucracy and so forth," Arnold said. "I hope that this striving to have a convention is where some of these things will be answered."

WOW! You seem so sure of this Article V Convention and that it will work smoothly.

Who would have thought that a U.S. President would use tax collectors to punish political opponents?

Who would have thought that a U.S. President would collaborate with the politicians of Mexico and Central America to flood our southern border with young children?

Who would have thought that a U.S.President would seduce people, ordinary people, into becoming his ‘Gestapo’ just by arming them with military class weapons?

Who would have thought that a U.S. President would use unmanned missiles to kill Americans and others in foreign nations?

So go ahead, tell me I don’t know basic human nature again; at least I won’t be present to see you get butchered.

I am not attacking anyone. I’m pointing out that this Article V Convention idea is fraught with potential, ahem, problems.

Take a stroll through the BOR. Only a few clauses remain in force, and Schumer, Durbin are in the process of outright repeal of the 1st.

From the amendment convention we can expect structural changes, that which cannot be ignored.

If that’s your opinion (and I’m not saying you’re wrong), what’s the harm of an Article V convention? You’re basically saying Obama’s going to do whatever he wants regardless of anything we do. Why would calling an Article V convention be harmful? At the very worst, he’d ignore any new amendments stemming from it. If he’s really going to effectively repeal the first, second, fifth, and any other amendments that he doesn’t like, won’t he just do it? Why would calling an Article V convention change that fact one way or another?

Decent point.

And, on the positive side, at least you don't like pedophiles and want them to babysit children, like Doug wrote, upthread

Every single one of your examples involves the use of executive power in an area where the executive controls the machinery of government.

The executive has no such machinery to manipulate in the amendment process.

Every single one of my examples demonstrates that Obama is evil and uses others to hurt America.

The left has wanted this for a long time, in the end we will be ruled by tyrants and our beloved constitution will be torn to shreds.

They will remove the 2nd amendment, free speech will be gone.

But he is only able to do that within his sphere of influence... ie.. the executive.

And the Democrat Party, aren’t they following his orders?

I think you see where I’m going with this: it isn’t just Obama’s executive role as President.

(By the way, did you finally get that auto transmission out of your bathtub?)

I first broached Article V and repeal of the 17th Amendment at FR in April of 2013.

I remain amazed at the resistance to reclaim our republic.

At this moment, the President of the United States, the Tyrant Obama is leading an invasion of our southern border. He coordinated with at least Mexico and Guatemala to overwhelm our defenses. His intent is to destroy the value of American citizenship and reduce us way below that of Argentina and Greece, to that of slavery.

Congress will do nothing that opposes the individual interests of its members. It is up to us to take the peaceful measures the Framers bequeathed

Meanwhile, too many at this forum can't see beyond the (R) following a name on a ballot. I refer them to Einstein's definition of insanity.

The ObamaFascists will have their standing army before this, the DemocrratFascists have already indicated they will R U L E us with an iron fist.

We had our last free election when Bush was elected for his second term, but just barely, they almost stole that one.

Anyone else think its a monumentally BAD Idea to let the same F’ers who are responsible for corrupting the Federal Government, get involved in the effort to fix the corruption they caused?!

That is the whole point of article 5 convention of the states, they are not the same F’ers.

They are some other F’ers.

Hands off my constitution!

Amend if you can, but there is not a politician alive that has the depth of character and wisdom necessary to be trusted with our founding documents.

And how would you propose to do that?

2/3 of states are needed to call the conventions. Just make sure the 17 most liberal states in the union are not included in the ones calling for the convention. Don't allow delegates from those same states in the convention. Then have any amendments ratified by state conventions, rather than the legislatures, so that there will be some hope in Hell of getting ratification in 38 states.

Wait a minute, I think you actually need 34 states to call, so exclude the 16 most liberal ones . . .
