Eric Cantor's reelection campaign spent more at steak houses than opponent Dave Brat spent on his entire campaign.
In a stunning upset, the second-highest ranking Republican in the House lost his primary challenge to tea party-backed economics professor Brat, who became the GOP nominee for Virginias 7th congressional district.

$10K per dinner?
Guess those Wall Street financiers aren’t big on burgers and fries.
RE: Guess those Wall Street financiers arent big on burgers and fries.
Harry Reid: “Nope, it was the Koch Brothers”
Doesn’t this put the lie to the idea that money is buying elections?
Never trust a candidate who lives like a rock star.
Sounds like it. Not clear precisely how many lobbyists were fed at these gatherings, 200 bucks a head at such a thing would be about the going rate I think. I wonder how many Chamber of Commerce swine got more than one steak bought
Looks like Cantor was trying to keep up with the Obamas.
Especially if they are doing it on other people’s money.
Doesn’t everyone spend $168K at steak houses?!
God Lord, we’re not ALL economists out here! How are we to know that’s silly ?
/sarc
At least the good guys finally won one here.
Maybe Cantor was a good guy at one time. This item alone shows how corrupt and out of touch DC can make people.
Only when it’s a Republican. Dems still poor mouth and claim the money is evil...............
The 4 Ways Of Spending
1) Spend your own money on yourself.
2) Spend your own money on somebody else.
3) Spend somebody elses money on yourself.
4) Spend somebody elses money on somebody else.
Guess which category Eric Cantor ( self-professed conservative ) belongs to...
It’s not just DC..............Sacramento, Albany, Philly, Boston.......etc............
FYI there are ZERO Bobby Van’s in Richmond are; only Manhattan and DC. Too much to expect Cantor and company to actually attempt to conduct a campaign from his district? At least Cantor and staff got some nice steak dinners on the dime of his K-Street masters.
VERY true.
The main issue is having too much government everywhere on all levels. Reagan was the last one who really understood this. Take their money away and their power diminishes.
As the Founders intended.
“Doesnt this put the lie to the idea that money is buying elections?”
NO! Unfortunately, money usually trumps substance because it usually supplants an effective message. Brat had a good message and delivered it very well. What we really need is more candidates who are intelligent, not just some self-important lawyer who’s looking for a cushy job where he doesn’t really have to work! What do you call a failed lawyer: “ Either Your Honor or Congressman.”
Oh, yeah - can’t count the number of times I’ve dropped ten grand at a restaurant. The hard part is finding out if they’re adding 15% to the bill before it reaches you. I mean, if it’s a party of less than six and they haven’t, they you’ve just stiffed the waiter. Bad politics.
