Google Releases Employee Data, Illustrating Tech’s Diversity Challenge
bits blogs ^ | 28 May 2014 | Claire Cain Miller

Posted on 06/10/2014 4:46:48 AM PDT by Cronos

Google on Wednesday released statistics on the makeup of its work force,

Thirty percent of Google’s 46,170 employees worldwide are women, the company said, and 17 percent of its technical employees are women. Comparatively, 47 percent of the total work force in the United States is women and 20 percent of software developers are women, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Of its United States employees, 61 percent are white, 2 percent are black and 3 percent are Hispanic. About one-third are Asian — well above the national average — and 4 percent are of two or more races. Of Google’s technical staff, 60 percent are white, 1 percent are black, 2 percent are Hispanic, 34 percent are Asian and 3 percent are of two or more races.

..Google’s disclosures come amid an escalating debate over the lack of diversity in the tech industry. Although tech is a key driver of the economy and makes products that many Americans use ever yday, it does not come close to reflecting the demographics of the country — in terms of sex, age or race. The lopsided numbers persist among engineers, founders and boards of directors.

The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., the civil rights activist, has been pressuring tech companies to release data on the makeup of their workforces

... only 18.5 percent of high school students who took the Advanced Placement exam in computer science last year were girls. In eight states, no Hispanic students took the test and in 12 states, no black students took it.

Yet some of the blame also falls on tech companies. There can be a sexist culture that turns away women, as evidenced by the high attrition rate among technical women as compared to men.

because life in an IT company is stressful, unhealthy and geeky and there are more, much more male geeks

What Google and others should do is forget about “diversity” and just hire the best people for the job. What a radical idea.

. . .and long hours on the job are not a problem for most geeks. But female employees demand more time off, etc.

And so, the population self-selects. .

It’s about what I would have thought it would be. The percentage of women is higher than my own work experience in IT would have thought.

It would be interesting to see their ‘burn-out’ rate for the different ‘groups’.

There is a lack of “diversity” in the tech industry because there is a lack of “education” and “skills” among non-Asian minorities.

Deal with it.

Seriously: DEAL with it. Respect education (like Asian minorities do!), mommies marry your baby-daddies, learn English (the official language of the tech industry), swap your hoodie for business casual, pull your gangsta panties up so your buttcrack doesn’t show, etc.

Just yesterday, I told my Asian CEO friend that we will export to his country two “Amish” for one Asian he sends over here. No limit. :-)

Only a biased woman could have written this article. Are computer science classes or training programs a 50-50 male-female mix? No, but then I've guess that sexist too.

So what's the solution? 1) We don't hire any men in technical positions until every woman that wants a technical job has one regardless of qualifications? or 2) We force women to undergo technical training (since they're not doing so by choice) and force them into technical fields?

And I guess no technically gifted woman ever thought of starting up her own software/computer shop where she could hire whoever she wants either, right?

“The problems start as early as childhood, when girls are discouraged by parents and teachers from pursuing technical pursuits.”

Another feminist myth that has become accepted knowledge.

Google is systematically denying Blacks the opportunity to work in I.T. In other news, the NBA is doing the same thing to Asians.

” Of Google’s technical staff, 60 percent are white, 1 percent are black, 2 percent are Hispanic, 34 percent are Asian and 3 percent are of two or more races.”

Google didnt become successful by hiring based on race or gender. The problem is once the hard work is done by the achievers, the representatives of the lazy, stupid and incompetent raise a stink and demand jobs for their people. The company starts to go to hell after that as incompetent minorities only hire other incompetent minorities.

The racial/ethnic makeup of Google's workforce doesn't tell you anything, because Google can only hire the people who respond to their recruiting, interview, and go through the rest of the hiring process.

The real proof would be for Jackson to trot out some qualified blacks who are being turned away from tech jobs when similarly qualified whites and Asians are being hired.

He can't, because they don't exist.

The real scandal in IT hiring is the degree to which qualified Americans -- regardless of race or ethnicity -- are turned away in order to hire H1-B foreigners. It's done dishonestly; the job will be posted, to comply with the law, but in obscure places and with a list of "skill requirements" that are sometimes flat out impossible to meet (e.g., "five years experience" with a technology that's been on the market for 3 1/2). When nobody can be found to fulfill the impossible requirements, they hire an H1-B. The H1-B doesn't fulfill the impossible requirements either, but nobody actually forces the company to prove that he does. It's fraudulent, and it's driving Americans out of high tech, and it's a scandal ... and it's the government's own fault.

Affirmative action occurs when people with IQs of 85 are placed into positions for which they are completely unqualified.

So. Diversity is a challenge not to find excellence, but a challenge to equalize the employee ranks with society’s demographics.

That’s good to know when you invest your money. It’s good to know that when you buy a product. It’s good to know that in general.
