Cavemen among us: Some humans are 4 percent Neanderthal
csmon ^ | May 6, 2010 | Pete Spotts

A new study concludes that humans mated with Neanderthals 50,000 to 80,000 years ago, leaving traces of the Neanderthal genome in some modern humans.

This picture shows the reconstruction of a Neanderthal woman at the Neanderthal Museum in Mettmann, Germany, on March 20, 2009. A new study is offering insights into how early humans and Neanderthals were similar and different.

Making, of course, the huge assumption that you only have one neanderthal ancestor, and assuming that none of your ancestors married cousins.

Neanderthal is awfully close to us if not archaic humans rather than distinct species.

I agree with you. I consider Neanderthals to have been fully human, albeit not modern humans.Put one in modern dress and he/she would not appear any weirder than what one can see at Walmart. That's not to denigrate Walmart. Walmart just gets a broad crosss-section of humanity.

Come to think of it, there are quite a few in CO who look like that, too.

Isn’t the Russian Boxer an elected member of the Duma and a Bigfoot hunter?

I would be on the higher end of that percentage scale according to my wife.
I just keep telling her that Neanderthal/Redneck don’t mean stupid.
(or in the case of congress braindead/crooked).

Couple or three beers and I’d hit it.

Exactly. I doubt things were different in this regard 50,000 years ago.

"Even 50,000 years ago there would be less than 1% DNA trace. This author is just ignorant. My Great Great Grandmother only gives me 12.5% of her genes so my 4th great grandparents would give me about 3%. That is a long way form 50-80 thousand years ago."

You're assuming that the person got 'one shot' of Neanderthal genes 50,000 years ago and that was it. They may have been getting a mixed % of Neanderthal genes from each generation...not just once.

Any particular one, yes....but summed over the entire tree?
Suppose the general population was 99% Homo sapiens sapiens, and 1% Homo sapiens neanderthalis. Now with complete intermingling, 5 generations later you have 32% of the population having that 4% (actually 3.125%) neanderthalis, with the remaining 68% being pureblood sapiens.

Now either the intermingling stopped (leaving the split at 68-32), or continued, making roughly everyone at 1% neanderthalis.

Of course other possibilities exist. Some of the neanderthalis may have died out without reproducing, etc.

But after 50,000 to 80,000 years there would be no trace neanderthal in the general population.

The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve

in local libraries
"Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]
