Newt and Van go on to list some possible solutions such as having the convicts get their GED while in prison and paying the prison system bonuses for cutting the rates of recidivism.

one out of every 50 people are in jail???

thats pretty bad

I am for decriminalizing non-violent drug laws

You should not go to jail for using drugs you should go to rehab- the money comes from it being illegal

if Pot was legal it would go from being $200 an ounce to $5 an ounce overnight

and it is FAR LESS harmful than alcohol (from a FORMER pot smoker who knows what he is talking about- its been over 20 years)

If you build prisons, or have any of a number of lucrative contracts like food service, laundry, counciling, legal services etc... the goin’s good. On the flip side of the coin, watch any prison tv documentary and you’ll realize they are locked up for a reason.

I’d rather listen to the late Richard Pryor on this.

“THANK GOD WE GOT PENITENTIARIES.”

Van Jones! The commie lovin Van Jones!?

What the hell is Newt doing paling around with that worthless waste of oxygen? Regardless of the merits, or lack thereof, of the articles premise, it loses credibility with Van Jones associated with it.

And no, I didn’t read it. I stopped when I read Van Jones.

He should sit on a park bench with the marxist and make another commercial. Then he and his wife can do a cartoon book about prisons.

How about simply turning prisons into productive places where prisoners earn their keep, instead of burdening the public with the costs? That should be first priority. After that, let them earn their degrees. These would all serve valid purposes for incarceration including rehab for some almost certainly.

There is nothing Newt won’t do for another shot at running for president. He needs an overture to the LGBT community. Maybe a sex change or a gay marriage.

I don't think that Newt understands that the Great Big Giant Criminal Justice-Prison Machine pays great money if you're one of the "Good Guy" cogs in the machine.

Looked up a young guy who worked for me many years ago. 7 years ago, he was making $80,000+ as a state prison system GED school principal. Not bad at all...

The big-government/big-corporate prison/industrial complex has metastasized and requires more criminals!

Quick! Pass some more laws!

“Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with.” ― Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged, 1957

Newt lies down with a dog and gets up with fleas.

America's prison problem doesn't stem from a failure of correctional theory. It stems from a ubiquitous immorality and its subsequent venality that sends people to prison in the first place.

Van Jones is an admitted Communist. His worldview has brought about the incarceration or death of at least a million of his own people. Like Obama, he is satanically focused on power and revenge. Neither understands sin.
