The McConnell challenge that wasn’t
Politico/Playbook ^ | 5/20/14 | JAMES HOHMANN

Matt Bevin seemed like the ideal candidate to challenge Mitch McConnell. The handsome and personable businessman, a father of nine, impressed national conservative groups looking for a chance to knock off the Senate Republican leader.

These groups, from the Senate Conservatives Fund to FreedomWorks, the Tea Party Patriots and the Madison Project, invested more than $1 million in the Kentucky GOP primary. Bevin himself spent more than $3 million, including $1 million of his own fortune.

And, yet, polls indicate he’s going to get creamed Tuesday.

Romney was a terrible candidate

When the MSM picks the GOP nominee, it's not going to be the person who can beat the DEM. Ever.

This system we’re in needs to go away. We need to get rid of it. We know it’s corrupt. We know McConnell is never going to be unseated. Why do we keep pouring money and time into it?

A lot of lessons to be learned here. Power of incumbency and vulnerability of novice campaign assembly and media influence; to name just two.

And others would be...

A good man stood in the breach with courage and took on the establishment power structure when they thought they were sacrosanct. And that IMHO is a big deal. Not to mention others that did ( the guy who ran against Cantor ) and even Cantor didn't rack up huge numbers. We are the barbarians at the gate, and IMHO they are scared....

McConnell was using his weight within the Republican Party to threaten organizations and candidates who teamed up with the TEA Party.

[ Wasn’t Cruz down big just before the election? ]

Cruz was but Cruz wasn’t runnign against an incumbent that the bingo playing AARP crowd had burned intheir minds because they have been pulling the same lever for the last 30 years...

If Bevin goes down the conservatives should find someone to run as an independent/third party

No thanks, Can’t stand Glenn Beck.

Speaking at a fundraiser to support cock fighting was a big mistake. I doubt many conservatives support legalizing cockfighting. It gave ammunition for McConnell. It makes me wonder if Bevin was chosen by the establishment with the express purpose of exploding at the end.

McConnell should have been beatable by a real conservative.

One more thing... The down ticket wins will be huge IMHO and the E-GOP will have to deal with those new turks with our mindset coming up through the ranks. One way or another they are going to have to deal with us...

It ain't over ... till it's OVER, and that includes the GENERAL.
If you can't retire the gutless RINO in the PRIMARY, retire him in the GENERAL.

I will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER vote for an "Establishment Republican" again, .... NEVER ! ! !

Dump Rove network and got with The Blaze. You will be much better informed and much better entertained. The fact that they reported a story that was already debunked WEEKS ago, is proof enough that they are pro-establishment and anti-individual liberty.

Pox on Fox.

Agree!!

He has forfeited support in the general election.”

I agree, but we need to take the seat. If I lived in Boehner or Cantor's district, I would vote for the Democrat just to get them out of there. We could afford to lose two seats in the House, but not in the Senate. If McConnell wins, he needs to lose the Senate leadership position.

No he didn’t support game cocks. He supported states rights. McConnell had his federal senate cronies pass a bill that was more federal overreach, an issue best left to the states.

Bevin gained the support of more than 60,000 members of the KY game cock tournament by coming out against McConnell by way of framing it as a state rights issue and in so doing locking up more than 60,000 voters. The rest of KY voters don’t care about the issue. But McConnell and the GOPe went nationwide with it trying to put Bevin the the game cock box.

If McConnell wins it, it will be because he bought it.

I think if McConnell gets past the primary, he loses in November. People really don’t like this weasel.

And by the last 2-3 weeks, Cruz had taken the lead. He was pulling away at the end….totally different dynamic than Kentucky.

Taking out Turtle via Grimes and taking out Boehner via his opponent is a winning strategy... possibly resulting in Cruz and Gowdy running both tables, respectively.
