Shut up and play? No, Michael Sam should do it the way Tim Tebow did

Jackie Robinson is the blueprint, or at least that's what so many seem to believe. It certainly wouldn't be a bad example for Michael Sam to follow. Robinson broke MLB's color barrier by putting his head down and competing. He won over critics by winning games for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Just shut up and play. Jackie Robinson is an undeniable American hero for what he did. How he accomplished it was his choice. For him and his day, it was perfect. That day, though, was 1947. The suggestion Michael Sam – as he reported for duty in St. Louis on Tuesday as the first openly gay player in NFL history – needs to follow that lead, nearly seven decades later, is ridiculous. Just shut up and play? That suggests he must still be a prisoner to the bigots among us. It means he needs to avoid stepping on offended and uncomfortable toes while smashing down walls that no reasonable person believes should be standing. "I'm determined to be great," Sam said Tuesday at a news conference in St. Louis with the other Rams draft picks. "I want to train hard and try to make the team. All my focus is on trying to make the team." Maybe Sam will be like Robinson. Maybe that's the path he'll follow. It's his choice, though. It certainly isn't about the comfort level of those who believe their personal comfort is of any importance.

So if Sam should be like Tebow, does that mean we can be to Sam like the critics were to Tebow?

As near as I can tell, Jackie Robinson didn’t think he was owed anything and probably felt he had to work harder to gain acceptance. Michael Sam, on the other hand, seems to think the NFL owes him a spot simply because he prefers hot dogs to tacos.

I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be able to watch football again with every play the queer makes being chatted up as if he were the most amazing thing in the world.

NFL - rejecting Christians and going queer. I’m done, tuning out.

Jackie Robinson is an undeniable American hero for what he did. How he accomplished it was his choice.

Actually, it was Branch Rickey's choice. Rickey told Robinson that he would have to take abuse and not return it.

Robinson, of course, was a tremendous talent. Sam is a reach in the 7th round for the NFL.

Before Jackie Robinson, people who were born with brown skin couldn't play MLB. Michael Sam puts his penis in the butts of other guys and has them put their penises in his butt.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I bet the Rams showers will have lots of dropped soap left on the floors

Wonder if anyone will notice his boner in the locker room?

I’m having trouble understanding what I just read. Sam had options other than the one he took. He is busy “gaming” the process now so that the owners have to fear the backlash that would result if he were to be cut.

I predict Sam gets hurt his first play in the NFL, and never plays again.

I just lost a few brain cells reading this tripe. So what’s he supposed to do? Talk about the joys of gay sex every time he’s interviewed? Have his boyfriend lick whipped cream off his stomach while he’s in the locker room? I really couldn’t give two hoots if he’s gay. You want to be gay, be gay. Just SHUT UP about it.

“Sam should do it the way Tim Tebow did”

He should do a pose, as Tebow did. One can imagine the possibilities.

Robinson had tremendous talent. Tebow good talent. The sodomite was drafted so that NFL could placate the left. He is not NFL caliber in any sense, but will be carried by the Rams because they will be forced to by Goodell and the NFL organization. They probably forced the draft, too.

That’s what I was thinking... perhaps he could hump the goal post or something.

I may be wrong, but I think this guy is going to fall flat on his face. This isn’t going to work out, and then watch the cat-fight over him being let go.

I’d love to own the popcorn concession then.

I don’t think he makes it to his first play in the NFL.

By the time training camp is over with, this guy will have been cut.
