Kherson (Ukraine) governor calls Hitler 'liberator' addressing veterans on Victory Day

Addressing the public on a Victory Day, the governor of Ukraine’s southern Kherson region trampled on the feelings of many veterans and desecrated the memory of all those who perished during the war against Nazi Germany by calling Hitler a “liberator.”

Governor of Kherson region Yuri Odarchenko was booed by thousands including WWII veterans when he told the previously cheering crowd that the Soviet Union tried to enslave Ukraine, while Hitler on the other hand tried to bring freedom to their land.

“Those [Soviet] aggressors justified their capture not only by their desire to seize others' territory and enslave the people, but they also put forward slogans about liberating nations and people that inhabit the lands which Hitler hoped to capture,” Odarchenko told the crowd.

Painting his version of the events further, he challenged history by saying that “if you read history books, we have a number of documentaries on this, then we see that he [Hitler] first of all put forward a slogan of liberating people from the communist yoke, and liberating people from the tyrant Stalin,” Odarchenko said, sparking anger and outraged by the crowd.

As thousands yelled out “shame”, a young woman with a child approached the governor, stripped him of the microphone, before throwing it away.

“But what is it they’re doing, if not to antagonize for a war?”

Your comment is irrational. Do you really believe that the Ukrainians think they will win - without immense cost - a war with the much larger, much better armed, much wealthier Russia?

And yet you claim “I’m just a person who’s fascinated with history and watching it unfold”? Yeah, sure.

In 1979, had an interesting conversation with the mother of a Marine friend of my dad's. She was from Latvia and fled with her husband and infant son to the U.S. after WW II. She told me that while the Germans had their bad moments, the Soviets were FAR WORSE (the family was ethnic German, so it could've colored their opinions).

Point was, I had grown up believing while everything the Nazis did was bad, that made anything anybody else did okay. Since then, I've realized that the only thing that was different btw the Soviets and the Nazis was that the Soviets were on our side (and the Soviets being on our side ensured there'd be no anti-war protests in the U.S. during WW II).

What the guy actually said is that Hitler used the same slogans as Soviets and that they both were aggressors, a kind of “master of the obvious” for all non-Soviets. A horde of ~100 Soviets booed. That's it, the rest is “Ukrainians are Nazis” propaganda spread by filthy soviet garbage.

“when Hitler first invaded Russia he entered the Ukraine and WAS looked on as a liberator; Stalin had been murdering the Ukrainians and they had hope Hitler would be a help. They had no idea what he would turn to be.

Booing the guy doesn’t change history.”

But doing so at a celebration of those who died is incredibly STUPID, especially given what has been happening.

Again, imagine John Kerry disparaging dead American Soldiers during an official Memorial Day celebration. Would you be outraged?

Talk about bad imagery. It doesn’t matter what the “truth” may be.

t was World War two Remembrance Day. That is flag they died under. Or do you think the Confederate flag, and the Gadsden flag, should be banned in the US, as well??

The Hammer and Sickle, pictures of Stalin and statues of Lenin have been some part of demonstrations in Odessa, Donetsk and other places by pro Russians.

Pretty TONE DEAF, right??

Waving the current Russian flag would be better in your opinion?

I know it's difficult for some people to admit, but it was the Soviet Army that liberated Ukraine from the Nazis and the day is a celebration of the Soviet Army defeating the Nazis.

“It was World War two Remembrance Day. That is flag they died under.”

Oh, so you would expect German WWII commemoration days to be chock full of swastikas, right? Nope, you don’t ever see a single one. The simple fact is the Russians and other communists have never been able to admit that their fathers and grandfathers died for a sick, disgusting, evil, thieving and murdering political system called COMMUNISM. They didn’t die for Russia. They didn’t die for any good cause. They died fro Stalin and the complete evil, bullsh!t system he imposed on that poor benighted part of the world.

“Or do you think the Confederate flag, and the Gadsden flag, should be banned in the US, as well??”

Do you really think that’s the same thing?

“Waving the current Russian flag would be better in your opinion?”

They should wave crosses and stars of David. That would be infinitely more fitting considering the enormous tragedy that those hammers-and-sickles represent.

“the rest is “Ukrainians are Nazis” propaganda spread by filthy soviet garbage.”

Perhaps it is.

My point is that it is HORRIBLE imagery on their version of Memorial Day, and plays right in to the “Ukrainian Nazi’s” meme.

Politically, it was an incredibly STUPID thing to say, given current events.

” but it was the Soviet Army that liberated Ukraine from the Nazis”

Did the Ukrainians feel that was the case in the 1940s? Not really. One slave master exchanged for another. There was no liberation for Ukraine until 1991.

You don’t.
Forget the hate for a second, and THINK about the imagery this creates.

“My point is that it is HORRIBLE imagery on their version of Memorial Day, and plays right in to the “Ukrainian Nazi’s” meme.”

But you’re wrong. 1) It’s words and not “imagery”.
2) What the governor said is 100% correct: Hitler had a SLOGAN of liberation of Ukraine. It was a lie, but he had that lying slogan. The governor is absolutely right on that point.

So, someone denies what the Soviets did other than liberate the Ukraine?

And as for the Star of David, the Nazis and Soviets neither one had any shortage of Ukrainian volunteers to help them carry out a Soviet pogrom or Hitler's directives either one.

Which must explain why Russian Media is playing it up, right??

All I can do is shake my head in wonder at people that refuse to acknowledge how important imagery is, in the digital age.

“You don’t.”

No, I do not think the Stars and Bars is the same as the Hammer-and-Sickle. Do you?

“Forget the hate for a second, and THINK about the imagery this creates.”

There is no imagery. He said WORDS - which were true. It’s RT - which is misquoting him of context in the headline - and you posting here who is creating [propaganda] imagery. You’re their willing stooge. Again, he said SLOGAN. He was clearly pointing out that Hitler had a slogan of liberation. Well, that’s a fact. So? You’re making it sound like he was praising Hitler by saying that. He wasn’t.

Again, it DOES NOT MATTER whether it is true or not.

I’m repeating myself, but what part of “Bad Imagery” is it you don’t understand?

YES, because they know willing stooges like you will fall for it because you won’t even take time to look at the actual quote and how it differs from what is said in the headline.

You’ve been suckered and it was so easily done.

What's more, the guy was likely deliberately provoked by a soviet crowd waving soviet flags and RT was there ready for the planned event. It's all soviet psy-ops.

From a Russian point of view they choose to ignore Holdomor and of course preventing the Russians from “liberating” Prague by remnants of the German armed and uniformed Vlasoff’s Ukrainian army. They were fighting the Russians then the SS which they drove out surrendering the Czech capital to the Czech resistance. Thus keeping the Russians out temporairily. As their reward the Czechs gave the Ukrainians a death sentence by handing them over to the Russians.
