Kherson (Ukraine) governor calls Hitler 'liberator' addressing veterans on Victory Day

Addressing the public on a Victory Day, the governor of Ukraine’s southern Kherson region trampled on the feelings of many veterans and desecrated the memory of all those who perished during the war against Nazi Germany by calling Hitler a “liberator.”

Governor of Kherson region Yuri Odarchenko was booed by thousands including WWII veterans when he told the previously cheering crowd that the Soviet Union tried to enslave Ukraine, while Hitler on the other hand tried to bring freedom to their land.

“Those [Soviet] aggressors justified their capture not only by their desire to seize others' territory and enslave the people, but they also put forward slogans about liberating nations and people that inhabit the lands which Hitler hoped to capture,” Odarchenko told the crowd.

Painting his version of the events further, he challenged history by saying that “if you read history books, we have a number of documentaries on this, then we see that he [Hitler] first of all put forward a slogan of liberating people from the communist yoke, and liberating people from the tyrant Stalin,” Odarchenko said, sparking anger and outraged by the crowd.

As thousands yelled out “shame”, a young woman with a child approached the governor, stripped him of the microphone, before throwing it away.

Evidently, Yuri Odarchenko is from Yulia Tymoshenko "Fatherland Party", a hard-right nationalist party from Western Ukraine.

Given recent events, is this guy TONE DEAF? This plays right in to the "Ukrainian Nazi's" meme.

Video of it is HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A05s6GrztbQ#t=136 Note what happens about two minutes in.

Well, unless there’s some problem in translation here, the guy is right. Hitler did “put forward a slogan of liberating people from the communist yoke, and liberating people from the tyrant Stalin”. It was a lie, but it sure sounded good to those oppressed by the Soviets.

Sooner or later people have to admit that the Soviets WERE NOT THE GOOD GUYS IN WWII. They were allied to the good guys - the U.S. and Britain. The Soviets were as evil as the Nazis.

Yes, the Soviets treated the Ukraine about like the Nazis treated the Jews. They killed millions of people in the 1930s, all dutifully covered up by the New York Times.

I like the governor. He’s got guts to tell the truth in front of a hostile, communist, hammer-and-sickle waving bunch of jackasses like that.

“the Soviets WERE NOT THE GOOD GUYS IN WWII.”

They weren’t...
They were just as brutal, and more, than the Nazi’s were.

But, since William Shirer, himself a Socialist and admirer of the Soviet Union, wrote the “Official” English-language history of WW2 (”Rise and Fall of The Third Reich”), and “Socialism” was so popular within certain elements in the west (Hollywood, the national press) the crimes of the Soviets were largely whitewashed, if mentioned at all.

That said, today’s Russia is not yesterday’s Soviet Union.

Ukie fascists of course are trying to rehabilitate Nazism. This is not acceptable under ANY circumstances. The Kherson governor defiled the Victory Day for all the Soviet people and the country’s 20 million dead.

I don't speak Russian so I don't know what the guy said.

But what I do know is that the people screaming are holding hammer and sickle flags and there are a lot of those flags there.

Speaking of being tone deaf that's playing right into the Russians are Communists meme.

Did you miss that?

“Given recent events, is this guy TONE DEAF?”

Would you be tone deaf if you said Trayvon Martin was just a thug or would you be right?

“This plays right in to the “Ukrainian Nazi’s” meme.”

No, the guy is a patriot and loves his country - Ukraine. Thus, he is not going to accept the communist meme that everything communist was hunky dory and all those opposed to communism (or now Russia) were (or now are) Nazis and fascists. Sadly, some FReepers are themselves apparently more pinko than they realize and easily fall for the communist meme.

In the autumn of 1941, about 10,000 Jews were killed in the city of Kherson alone. It is estimated that at least 47,000 Red Army soldiers died while force-crossing the Dnieper as they tried to liberate the city from the Nazis.

The Soviets were German Allies when the war started, and they jointly started the war when they agreed with the Nazis to carve up Poland.

Without the Non-Aggression Pact, it’s doubtful if Hitler could have invaded Poland.

When you find yourself having to make excuses for Nazis, you are seriously looking at something the wrong way. And the really funny thing about the situation is that these idiots’ new Führer (Soros) is Jewish...

“That said, today’s Russia is not yesterday’s Soviet Union.”

Except that it is run by many of the same people. Putin is a former KGB agent. Notice the Hammer-and-Sickle flags in the video by the way?

“He’s got guts to tell the truth”

Playing right in to Russian memes about the “Kiev Nazi’s”.

Truth or not, it is INCREDIBLY politically stupid, given current events. Especially on the day dedicated to celebrating those who died in WW2.

Imagine someone from La Raza giving a like speech on the National Mall on July 4th, or Memorial Day?

is this guy tone deaf?

I'm just a person who's fascinated with history and watching it unfold. If the Kiev gov had done their role correctly....temporary, impartial, not making major decisions and just holding things in place until there was a nation-wide election, before Crimea got to do one on their own, think what might have been. They could've been an idependent neutral state benefitting from being the gate between Russia and the EU. The thing to do would've been to drive the corrupt Oligarchs out of power.

Instead, the aspire to be an in-debt source of cheap labor for the EU. Burning people inside a building in Odessa after chasing them in there might go down in history as the first day of the permanent split of Ukraine. And now, praising Hitler when people are fearing a rise of neo-Nazism and at the celebration to his defeat? Wow.

The pro-Kiev posters will be here soon calling me a Putinista or uninformed or whatever. But what is it they're doing, if not to antagonize for a war? I'd assume a huge chunk of eastern Ukraine is gone to them after Odessa. Ukrainians are intelligent, determined, resourceful people as a group. Those in the east are not going to be subdued by bullying.

That's just my take.

Russia Neo-Nazism
In a 2007 news story, the ABC News reported, "In a country that lost more people defeating the Nazis than any other country, there are now an estimated 50,000 to 70,000 neo-Nazis, half of the world's total."

“The Kherson governor defiled the Victory Day for all the Soviet people and the country’s 20 million dead.”

It matters that someone defiled something for “all the Soviet people”? When did we start caring about not defiling communism - especially with the truth about what slogans Hitler used?

I remember many years ago being told by my history teacher that when Hitler first invaded Russia he entered the Ukraine and WAS looked on as a liberator; Stalin had been murdering the Ukrainians and they had hope Hitler would be a help. They had no idea what he would turn to be.

Booing the guy doesn’t change history.

“Notice the Hammer-and-Sickle flags in the video by the way?”

It was World War two Remembrance Day. That is flag they died under.

Or do you think the Confederate flag, and the Gadsden flag, should be banned in the US, as well??
