Senator Rand Paul broke with fellow Republicans by saying that the focus on stricter voting laws to crack down on fraud alienates African-Americans and hurts the party.
Everybodys gone completely crazy on this voter ID thing, Mr. Paul said in an interview. I think its wrong for Republicans to go too crazy on this issue because its offending people. ... The bigger issue actually is whether you get to vote if you have a felony conviction, he said. Theres 180,000 people in Kentucky who cant vote. And I dont know the racial breakdown, but its probably more black than white because theyre convicted felons. And Im for getting their right to vote back, which is a much bigger deal than showing your drivers license. ... Mr. Paul becomes the most prominent member of his party and among the very few to distance himself from the voting restrictions and the campaign for their passage in states under Republican control, including North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin, that can determine presidential elections. Civil rights groups call the laws a transparent effort to depress black turnout.

The second quote about getting felons to vote is even more disturbing to me than the voter ID -- which is very disturbing to me.
I don't care if we hurt the feeling of a bunch of corrupt people. If you are honest, showing an ID to vote shouldn't bother you.
I look at the huge teacher test changing parties that went on in Atlanta, and I immediately wondered if we can ever have an honest election when this many people are willing to cheat.
It really offends me that blacks claim to be offended by voter ID. It actually disgusts me and lowers my opinion of anyone that promotes that.
Anyway, it is also telling that the NYSlimes has shut down comments and seems to have elevated the pro vote fraud comments. You have to hunt down to find the reasonable comments and I don't recommend anyone waste their time even with the article. The important thing is we find out what Ryan is thinking.
Wow. Shortest Presidential campaign ever.
I wonder why the “African-Americans” have a problem with showing an I.D. Something stinks here. What are they up to?
I never understand this debate about voter ID.
In a world in which you need an ID to get on an airplane, enter a federal building, and to conduct various business transactions, why would that same reasoning not apply to voting????
And, the liberals act as if the Supreme Court didn’t rule that voter ID laws are constitutional. Instead, they continue to bring court cases on these laws in various states, and in some states, liberal judged have set aside voter ID laws, in defiance of the Supreme Court ruling on the subject.
How lower court judges can overturn voter ID laws when the Supreme Court has already ruled on the issue is beyond my pay grade. Has anyone else noticed that? And can anyone explain any legitimate legal reasoning behind this?
Rand Paul...Foot...Gun...Bang!
I agree, it is from the nyt and they are probably trying to take him out early. However some clarification from Paul is needed.
Paul needs to stop talking
An older article still relevant...
Minority turnout increased dramatically after Georgia voter-ID law

I think its wrong for Republicans to go too crazy on this issue because its offending people.
Well, we sure would hate for anyone to be offended, wouldn’t we. What a joke. He’s worried about offending people who are perpetually offended. That’s weak stuff.
Voting early and often.

HOGWASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Senator Paul, illegal aliens are illegal.
Felons are felons - I didn’t make them commit the felony, and I resent that you want to dilute my vote with the vote of a felon.
Voter fraud is fraud - and dilutes the vote of honest voters. Voter fraud is color blind, it dilutes the votes of every person, regardless of race. There is only one reason a person would oppose the elimination of voter fraud...well, besides pandering.
If you are OK with voter fraud, you are opposed all honest voters. You have lost my vote and my support...and that ain’t no fraud or felony!!!
Do the Pope and Rand Paul have the same PR advisors?
OK. So conservatives would vote for Rand Paul why?
And Senator Rand - this will not gain you ONE black vote, not even a fraudulent one!!
This guy is shaping up to take over for John McCain.
:: I think its wrong for Republicans to go too crazy on this issue because its offending people. ::
OK, if this quote is verifiable, I no longer supprt RP in any way/shape/form and will militate against him (yes, militate is the right term)in all venues.
(On corroboration) Rand Paul is not a patriot and should be shunned and treated as a tax collector and prostitute.
Oh...wait...he’s in WashDC; I am redundant.
Producing a photo ID alienates those who don’t have a legal right to vote, I’d say. Is it OK to say Rand Paul has his head up his a** on this issue?
Yeah, I agree.
For some reason, black have been brain washed or programmed to hate Republicans. Pandering doesn’t help us and probably hurts us with blacks who are free thinkers and already vote or are considering conservative voting.
Pandering definitely hurts with all conservatives.
> “And I dont know the racial breakdown, but its probably more black than white because theyre convicted felons.”
He just told the truth, insulted them, and lied about how he really felt just to get their vote. Now if that’s not a career politician I don’t know what is...
