Middle-Income Wage, Not The Minimum, Needs To Be Raised
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 05-07-2014 | Rand Paul and Stephen Moore

The average salary in the U.S. is not $7.50 an hour, as Mr. Obama seems to think, but $23 an hour — or triple the minimum wage.

The jobs report told us something else that is crunching the working class. Workers are having a harder time than ever finding a full-time, 40-hour-a-week job. Employers we talk to tell us this is partly due to ObamaCare rules that are holding many new positions below 30 hours a week. (Since when is 30 hours a week a full-time job anyway?)

The White House's new proposed overtime rules are another misdirection play: Mr. President, the problem is that workers are getting too few, not too many, hours on the job.

Mr. Obama's tax increases have also held down wages. It has been a truism for at least 100 years — and probably for time immemorial — that worker pay rises with worker productivity. It's simple: the more widgets or potato chips or microchips a worker produces, the more the employer will pay her.

In last week's dismal GDP report, business spending on investment in plant, equipment and technology fell. That drop matters to workers because with less capital to improve their workplaces, they aren't as productive, and they can't command higher wages.

Middle-Income Wage, Not The Minimum, Needs To Be Raised

Exactly. Those at the low end are beneficiaries of all kinds of freebies. Not so the middle income folks.

The minimum wage is the new middle income wage, that’s the way the communists planned it.

How about we all get paid what we’re worth.

The market says that if you can’t make what you’re worth, you go find another job.

It also says that if you’re paid more than you’re worth, the job will ask you to leave.

It all shakes out in the end. Either earn the raise, or be happy with your current pay. End of story.

Unfortunately no one teaches this any more, and rather than earning an honest buck we just sign up for “free !@#$”.

Exactamundo.

The ‘middle class’ is being purposely impoverished by currency inflation, slow enough and lied about enough to avoid a revolution.

The middle class (’bourgeoisie’ to classical Marxists) is the main obstacle to socialist utopia. Hatin’ on the rich has always been a red herring.

The averages don't mean much. Median hourly wages are much higher than $7.50, but they're not $23.50. The median wage earner made between $25K and $30K in 2012. Assuming, conservatively, that all of them were full-timers who worked 40 hours a week, that pencils out to an hourly wage of $13.22 per hour. Almost 1/3 of on-the-books wage earners made between $10K and $15K per year. That comes to $6 an hour (assuming a full time workload), but this bracket probably includes a fair number of part-timers. It would be interesting to find out if the IRS numbers include joint tax returns as individual income earners for the purposes of the stats given.

The Obama’s railed against “middle class-ism” in their 2008 campaign, saying that working harder to get ahead is a bad thing,

They talk about how there needs to be a pay raise for the lower wage earners with children.
Why not just increase the child tax credit? Then you reward those who have children, without upping the minimum wage that cuts off the career ladder to millions.

I agree with you but that’s not how it works at many companies right now. I recently had my annual review which was excellent. I consistently exceed expectations. I was told I qualify for an annual raise but the company froze annual pay increases a couple of years ago. My second annual review with this company and that’s the second time I’ve been told that. Pay increases are and have been frozen across the board.

So to summarize....

Many people aren’t getting paid what they’re worth right now but need the job

If you can’t make what you’re worth there really aren’t many alternatives out there

Getting paid more than your worth does not equate to the job asking you to leave. There are plenty of examples of this in both the private and public sector.

I did earn my raise based on the goals and standards put forward. I could demand a raise, and get it, stating I’ll quit if I don’t get it but that opens up a whole other can of worms.

I was always taught that if you work hard and do a great job you will be rewarded. My reward consisted of having to cut my payroll, let one person go, and absorb more work at the same pay. Oh, and I don’t get free shit.

On a side note I am actively searching for a new job and will have finally finished school come summer. It’s been a rocky couple of years but we’ll keep on pushin ahead.

I’d tell them I was freezing my work effort. No raise is actually a pay cut since inflation is steadily eroding the value of the dollars that are paid.

Nope.

We do NOT need more money to pay our TAX BILL; but LESS taxes!!!

Of COURSE those in gummint want you making more money; as it slides you higher up the tax RATE that you have to pay; INCREASING your taxes without passing any tax increase at ALL!

Mr. President, the problem is that workers are getting too few, not too many, hours on the job.

That's EXACTLY what he wants!

Then a person needs a SECOND job; falsely giving the IMPRESSION that 'more jobs are created'!!

BHO would just LOVE to have us ALL working 4, ten hours a week 'jobs'. He could REALLY crow about his famously successful JOB CREATION abilities!
