Two people were shot Monday afternoon near the National Zoo, marking the second time in three years that an annual Easter Monday event has ended with violence.
The shooting, near the zoo during its annual African American Family Celebration, came as a large number of officers were already in the area.
"We were not expecting this, but we had a heavy police presence," Cmdr. Reese said in an evening press conference.
The Easter Monday event for black families across the region grew out of a grassroots community tradition more than 100 years ago.

"We were not expecting this, but we had a heavy police presence," Cmdr. Reese said in an evening press conference.
When American Negroes gather, does the violence occur randomly or is the violence a tradition? The cops weren't "expecting" it, but it seems they were waiting for it.
For later
wait just a darn minute....
Wasn’t that a GUN-FREE ZONE????
During the....”African American Family Celebration”....
What, their now celebrating killing each other? Street Rats have no values for ANYTHING, even life itself.
It does seem it was just a coincidence that there was a heavy police presense at the event since no violence was expected.
“...during its annual African American Family Celebration...”
So when is the annual Caucasian Family Celebration, or the Asian Family Celebration?
Must be a free food event!!
Celebrating the greatest number of abortions per race?? Someone should tell them that there is something called birth control. Ignorant....?? No....lazy!!
Meeting of Holder’s people.
We get to pick and choose what laws we obey.
Someone told me, it’s all happening at the zoo.
I do believe it, I do believe it’s true.
D.C. Police Commander Michael Reese says a large group of 30 to 50 people were walking southbound on Connecticut Avenue and a person in the group produced a handgun and fired several rounds.
A police source tells FOX 5 some of the people in the group were inside the zoo and some of them never went inside. The source also says investigators are looking at a possible grudge between two neighborhood groups as a motive for the violence.
The man who was shot in the hand may have shot himself accidentally and was not cooperating with detectives, according to the police source.
Reese says police do not have a suspect description at this time and are asking for anyone who witnessed or have any information about the shooting to contact police. Police say they have not recovered the gun that was used in the shooting.
So no one knows nothing about nothing but I'm sure it's the NRA's fault.
‘Easter Monday???’
The zoo is in Cleveland park a very pretty old neighborhood on Conn Ave NW. Time to scrap this “tradition”
The shooting, near the zoo has become a part of its annual African American Family Celebration——
LOL! African-American Family Celebration......at the National Zoo....go figure.
Here's what wikipedia says
A tradition amongst Poles and Eastern Orthodox ? Hmmm... Probably not too many American Negroes fall into that group. The Poles and Eastern Orthodox probably aren't gathering to shoot one another either.
It’s a light and tumble journey
From the East Side to the park;
Just a fine and fancy ramble
To the zoo.
We need to start deporting violent offenders that claim dual nationality.
It happens every year but we weren’t expecting it.
It’s truly sad that large gatherings of blacks are almost always violent.
Do they not realize the damage they are doing to their own community and to the way the rest of us look at them?
