Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday jokingly implied that Alaska wasn't worth reunifying with Russia because it was too cold.
At a nearly four-hour, question-and-answer event, one submitted question for Putin asked if, following the annexation of Crimea, he had designs for the largest of the United States.
Are there any plans to annex Alaska to Russia? We would be very happy [about that], said Faina Ivanovna, drawing laughter from the crowd.
What would you need Alaska for? Putin said with a smile.
We are a northern country 70 percent of our territory is in the north and far north. You think Alaska is in the Southern Hemisphere? Its quite cold there, too, Putin said. Lets not be overly enthusiastic about it because if we have our people there, we will have to pay extra to our employees there because they live in the north.
Putin remarked that Russia sold Alaska to the United States in 1867 for $7.2 million in gold, which he said wasnt that expensive.
A petition on the White House website calls for Alaska to secede from the U.S. and rejoin Russia. Since it was created in late March, nearly 42,500 people have signed it.
In the 19th century, some in the U.S. criticized Secretary of State William Seward's purchase of Alaska, calling it Sewards folly.
Thirty years later, however, a gold rush hit Alaska and it was seen as a valuable addition to the U.S. The sale has since been a sore spot for Russians.
Alaska is America.
Putin back off! Obama is a useless president.
2016 cannot get here soon enough.
Hey Putie. You can have California. Its not cold there. And New York, Massachussetts and New Jersey.
Where’s Bath-House Barry playing gold today...when a communist leader jokes about taking over part of the country he has sworn to defend?
Folks, don’t think for a moment that this is not completely orchestrated.
Obammie the Commie agrees with the Soviet ideology. He is pretending to fight back against Putin and the neo-EUSSR, but he is not. He wants the USSR to rise again, retake its bloc countries, and for Europe to be subservient to the neo-USSR and for the USA to be reduced to a dried up eastern Europe type of nation.
His red lines and sanctions are a farce.
Obammie the Commie is Putin’s enabler.
oops
gold=golf
I’ve done oilfield design for north slope Alaska and for Northern Siberia. Siberia is colder.
Stewards folly(also Sewards Ice Box) was bought and payed for with $7M of hard earned American tax payer dollars that is probably equivalent to $7 trillion today. He knows it.
He respects Palin. She is more of a man than zer0 canl ever be and he respects powerful people. He has nothing but distain for the creep with the mom jeans
How do you like your boy president now, America? Your country is a Russian punchline.
I know, I know - as long as the EBT card stays charged up everything is copacetic.
The problem is President Beefcake would have to wear a shirt. He hates it when he can’t show off his shaved chest.
To even joke about annexing (stealing) an American state would have been unheard of before the “Age of Obama”.
Yeah but the girls are hotter.
“Come and keep your comrade warm.”
0bama was installed to facilitate the Soviet reunification. I have no doubt about that.
Wow. Putin is so arrogant. He has no fear whatsoever, and needn’t worry until 2016. It’s like a teen doing what he wants cause his parents are away.
“nearly 42,500 people have signed it”
Palin haters?
My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you today that Ive signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.
The sobering truth is that he could probably do it, and Obama would merely try to find a way to make sure that it doesn’t affect his legacy. Heck, he may sell it back for that same $7 million.
And when was the Alaskan Gold Rush?
Actually, he's useful. Just not for us.
Yeh right....
