Sticker shock at the steak house; beef prices highest in 27 years

Edd Hendee reached into the chilled glass case containing cold cuts of steak, the classic Texas entrée upon which he built his restaurant and his fortune, proudly showing off his merchandise like a jeweler displaying his diamonds.

“This is a center cut filet,” he said. “It’s the very best filet you can possibly buy. And that’s why it’s expensive.”

And lately, at the Taste of Texas restaurant in west Houston, it’s become even more expensive.

“When the price goes from just under $20 a pound to us wholesale to almost $25 a pound, that’s almost a $5 increase in this steak to me,” Hendee said. “I had to pass some of that along to the customers.”(continued)

I hear Asian carp taste very good and are in over abundance. Just need a boat and net or a bow. I see more people doing this on the Illinois River. It is a clean fish.

The only time we have beef is when Safeway has it in the ‘managers special’ section. Basically it’s the beef that MUST BE SOLD that day, and it usually has a sticker for 50% off the lowest price. Just bought some stew meat today. What normally would have cost about $12 for just under 2.5 lbs I got for ~$7. Either use it by tomorrow, or get it in the freezer.

I hate to rain on everyone’s parade but the Price has NOT gone up a Penny. The VALUE of your MONEY is and has been STOLEN from you on a Continual Basis via the Federal Reserve by means of THEFT by DILUTION (counterfeiting, debasing),ie. Inflation

If you need to buy that much, contact a local rancher and see how much for an actual cow

I already know the problem there. They have big brown eyes. They look at you and say, “Moo?” So, what do you do with a 1,200 pound pet? The landlord will be p*ssed if he finds out.

I hear you. I’ve been creating a lot of meals with beef shank, pork hocks, ham hocks, neck bones and other cheaper meats. My dad was a Cracker and cooked that way, so no one minds these delicious meals: pork hocks and sauerkraut, pork neckbones and peppery rice, ham hocks and cabbage or beans, chicken wings with dumplings or noodles, etc., you get the drift

Carp is a freshwater fish? Since it’s Passover, that might be in abundance here in the northeast.

These are all delicious foods. But in my America, we had the choice of great cuts of beef as well as the delicious but cheap cuts.

Even extremely expensive, good quality chicken breasts are unavoidable - although I bite the bullet and buy Kosher.

As more people switch to cheaper substitutes, expect the prices of pork and chicken to rise also. So much for this year’s grilling season....

Pressure can it.

We did up about 40 pounds of stew meat in jars. It is tender, tasty and you can use it in just about anything.

the delicious but cheap cuts.

Oh, they're delicious enough, but they chew like rubber.

Chewy chewy cheaper cuts,
lasts a long time.

LOTS of pork in this house, and chicken. Having grilled teriyaki chicken breasts tonight. Your pork hocks and sauerkraut made my mouth water. I LOVE sauerkraut, but it HATES me at 3 in the morning. :D

We wanted to name the pig Lucy. Dad named her Pork-chop.

She was yummy.

Yeah, they must be long-cooked to soften. But, if you have good choppers, they have that wonderful beefy flavor that more expensive cuts lack. As an American, I want it all.

Problem with that is I don’t have the $$$ to buy enough to put up with canning, or I would! We’re on a week to week basis here.
