Washington (AFP) - The United States warned Russia Thursday not to use energy costs as an instrument of political coercion, after Moscow scrapped its last gas price discounts for Ukraine.
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev earlier announced the move, effectively raising the price by $100 to $485 for every 1,000 cubic meters of gas.
Asked about the decision, White House spokesman Jay Carney warned "markets should determine energy prices."
"A country should not use supply and pricing terms as tools of coercion to interfere in Ukraine or anywhere else," he said.

What an odd and maybe totally incoherent thing to say in this context. Moscow, by raising the price IS letting markets determine energy prices.
“A country should not use supply and pricing terms as tools of coercion to interfere in Ukraine or anywhere else,” — Kerry
How about as tools to coerce US citizens to have a “lower carbon footprint”?
I guess that’s ok.
I believe the Ukraine government adds their cut to the peoples bill...just like our government does.
Obama:
putin you be nice or I will hit you with my purse
“Asked about the decision, White House spokesman Jay Carney warned “markets should determine energy prices.”
Like closing coal mines and preventing drilling on federal land?
This administration has become a bad comedy routine.
How about the taxes that our government adds to the price of every little bit of energy products we buy....state tax & Federal Tax....
The US does not seem to understand market economy. It thinks Russia should supply gas for free to a country with a regime hostile to Moscow? One moreover, that has a large debt in arrears outstanding to pay? Russia is not going subordinate its national interests to that of the US, the EU or any one else. If they want to supply Ukraine on their own with cheap gas - they’re welcome. But gas from Russia is not a Ukrainian entitlement. As usual - the West wants to have it both ways on Ukraine, whose being on the verge of bankruptcy was not created by Russia. Again, the West is free to pick up the slack for its new ally. It simply has no right to expect Russia to subsidize it.
Carney wouldn’t know a market from a muffin.
Ukraine was left with a HUGE army....500,000 soldiers. There are 90,000 now. And citizens are being disarmed.
Sounds like another “red line”....LOL
> White House spokesman Jay Carney warned “markets should determine energy prices.”
IOW, impeach now.
Hypocrisy, thy name is the US.
