Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert Papp said that in 2010 Obama told U.S. military leaders to accept his push for gays in the military, and that if they didn't, they could take the "opportunity to resign [their] commissions."
Papp said these things in a video BuzzFeed obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.
The video shows a speech Papp delivered to Coast Guard Academy cadets during which he was asked how he would deal with enforcing an order with which he didn't agree. He used the story of his 2010 meeting with Obama as an example of how service members' duties can be compelling and conflicting with personal desires....

At some point, you have to acknowledge that there are more important things.
At what price do you sell your soul?
Don’t become a stalker.
If you can get someone to help you form a relevant post to this thread, then do it.
You are correct.
There’s also the attitude within the ranks of, “I survived the last four presidents - I can outlast this one.”
We see policy come and go and the next guy swings it back the other way. Because of the change in the political winds from year to year, you just hunker down through the bad stuff and wait for common sense to return.
I never understood why ‘we’ must compromise. WE hold the power. A RINO cannot win unless WE give them our votes. The GOP cannot survive on rich RINO donations and no return on the dollar. Nor can they survive without us. This strategy has worked for the special interest libs for decades. Thats why the Dem leadership kisses their arses individually and with loving grace. They understand that each of their varied groups can end the fantasy at any time by witholding their votes. And THAT is what real power looks like.
We are the majority. Every poll shows conservative being the dominant belief of most of the right when asked. Not moderate or Rockafeller. All we have to do is speak with one voice and stop listening to the Rove types in the media and his clones on right wing websites.
That’s how hardball works. My way or the highway. And it’s damn time we play it.
There is nothing new under the sun.
I don’t know what I would do. It’s easy to say that someone else should sacrifice their career and financial future.
They are not. Good women are as mature and responsible and brave as good men. Don't insult us. We are your partners.
That is an interesting observation, I would like to see more on that aspect.
I like their company in manageable doses and social settings, but your description of them at work, is true from what I have seen.
There isn’t a lot that I don’t know about Romney, but I have never heard that.
I have to call BS, and I would like to see some sources.
They both have led to people getting killed and incalculable damage done to our national security. But since you don't like homosexuals, Snowden's a good guy.
What of all the people infected with AIDS? No harm you say?
We routinely screen for HIV. We have for years. If you have it, you're gone.
What of all the families screwed up because of gay drama? I speak from experience there.
Stupid family drama is practically a cornerstone of the military experience. Hardly anything new there. I guess the married Soldier who was impregnated by the pizza guy and having an affair with her own father is better since she's not a lesbian (yes, that actually happened).
What of any of a million things showing clearly and unambiguously the damage gay has done to the planet? Gay helped destroy empires for God sakes.
I certainly dislike the cultural implications, but, being as objective as I can be despite my personal serious distaste for homosexuality, the net effect has been zero.
My premise is solid. You refuse to address a very direct question to the very relevant issue. Nothing more.
I've asked from the start what the benefit of those resignations would be for this issue, and I have yet to get a response. So--you first.
When it comes to retirement. . .generals (flag rank) are in a position where retirement is not a hardship financially.
Most officers wish to rise in rank because it makes a nicer retirement, but also they wish to rise in rank because they can make their “world” “better.”
After decades of suffering fools then they get in a position of leadership, they can now run their world (to an extent), protect those under them.
Sadly, we did not have a revolt of the admirals when the big zero came onboard. If they retired together the message would have been loud and clear, instead, these weak spirited generals now are more concerned about getting a guest spot on MSNBC and CBS, MSM than doing their job. Doesn't save them, going along with the big zero. He is weeding out the “old” boys so he can ‘stuff’ the girly-boys into leadership positions.
Sad. . .
you may resume mouth breathing and knuckledragging
This is an existential situation for America. That level of brass is tasked with decisions daily that get people killed or irreparably effect their lives. Sometimes bu the thousands. Or more. It’s the big boys chair.
Do we want people who do that yet when faced with their decision affecting them personally they cower?
On a more personal level, if you (the general you) have knowledge that you can prevent a disaster of massive consequence and do not try, could you honestly look at your family and face them knowing they will never see you the same way again?
T-o me, no material thing is worth that.
So now we're going to freak out over conspiracies. Got it.
As someone who has also served, I can see real problems occurring between those who are straight and those who are openly gay.
So can I, very easily. But I have to deal in facts. The fact is that the policy is that homosexuals can serve openly. Nothing will change that short of a presidential order. The fact is that I treat my Soldiers as equally as I can. We have standards of conduct. If a guy grabs a girl's ass in the office, he's just as toast as the guy who grabs another guy's ass. Period.
We can lament the change all we want and demand flag officers' heads for "allowing it to happen" (like they had a choice in the matter), or we can work to make sure those people understand that they are indeed nothing special in the slightest and they'd better toe the line with every other Soldier around them.
Go back and reread my posts on this thread. I provided your answer before you ever asked the question.
The rest of your post is too asinine to take seriously.
I demonstrate absurdity by being absurd and you leap into it with both feet. Good for you.
Oh sure, I’ve been called a traitor before by people like you b/c I wouldn’t “rah rah” the popular opinion on FR. Par for the course around here.
I had far more heterosexual Soldiers having sex in their off-duty hours in Afghanistan. The implications there weren’t good either, but, to quote a formerly-loved SecDef, you go to war with “the Army you have.”
I don’t disagree with you, but I hesitate to condemn those who made the choice to stay on, since I’ve never faced that kind of decision. Perhaps those who remained thought they could do some good if they continued on.
Mass resignation of the JCS, let's say, will not go unnoticed or un-commented on by even the most lame MSM outlet.
It would cause reporting and wake the American people (for just a second) to what is going on.
The Big Zero would then be caught forcing his most senior military leaders to accept a social agenda that most Americans object to.
Mass resignations would open the doors to a heck of a lot of nastiness in news reporting and enraging the public as they would then know, have proof of, how the Big Zero is forcing politics into the military, making uniform promotions solely based on politics.
That would be the result.
