Don’t have to wager. With Mitt, it depends on the audience. If he wanted you believe he was against amnesty, he would say he was a severe conservative to your face. But, if you were a part of the hispanic audience, he would ban all the reporters and tell you to forget all that other talk — you’ll get your amnesty with him in office.

Just as he wanted gays in the military and actually instituted gay marriage in this country, he wanted his illegal friends from his dad’s birth country (Mexico) to have easy access to US citizenship.

I would never bet on anything Romney says at any given time. Whatever he is touted as saying, you can find him saying the exact opposite with another crowd.

Hunter was retiring in 2008, he was just getting publicity to make sure his seat of 28 years went to his son.

Hunter, who knew he was never leaving his safe Congressional seat, did not suddenly, after 28 years, as he was retiring, think that he was going to suddenly become the kind of politician who could never run for statewide office, but would out of the blue, become president of the United State

I can be persuaded that we should deport them all. I guess compassion is getting the best of me, because I know how much they want to stay here, what a wonderful country this is to live in, as opposed to the gangs and other chaos of Mexico.

Deportation of all of them is almost a tactical impossibility too, without starting a whole snitching and Gestapo-type culture. I guess I just feel if we could really close the border, the problem would work itself out in time. Meanwhile, anyone caught it identity theft or any other crime would be deported.

I understand your point of view. It’s encouraging others to sneak in if we don’t deport everyone. I’m rambling. It’s kind of late. But those are my thoughts right now.

But he was the only legitimate guy on immigration back in 2008—when we had a better chance of not ending up with 40 million new, largely uneducated, government-supported Democrat voters in our country.

You seem to be buying the pro-amnesty crowd line using the false choice between mass deportation versus a blanket amnesty. There is another alternative called attrition thru enforcement. The lawbreakers did not get here overnight and they won't leave overnight. We must make the US as unwelcoming as we can for illegal aliens. Cut off the job magnet, eliminate all benefits, enlist the aid of state and local law enforcement to enforce our immigration laws, etc. The last thing we should be doing is legalizing their presence.

Your use of the word Gestapo is particularly offensive. It is a tactic of the Left to use such emotion laden pejoratives to brand those of us who believe in the Rule of Law as bigots, fascists, and nativists. The illegal aliens are not the same as Jews fleeing from the Holocaust. No one is advocating rounding up the illegals and putting them on rail cars to concentration camps.

I guess I just feel if we could really close the border, the problem would work itself out in time.

Securing the border only solves part of the problem. 40% of the illegals get here legally and then overstay their visas. We need internal enforcement of our immigration laws. That is the way the "problem" will work itself out.

We had an amnesty in 1986. The proponents said it would be one-time, never to happen again and that it would solve our illegal immigration problem. The government estimated that one million would apply, but the true number turned out to be 2.7 million--almost three times the estimate. The process was rife with fraud with phony documents being manufactured just blocks away from processing centers.

So now there is another call for amnesty out of compassion. We now have 12 to 20 million illegal aliens. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Almost? Try GUARANTEED BLOODSHED in the streets, open civil war, especially here in So Cal., and you are exactly right, a Gestapo-type culture.

There's a better way. Axe the minimum wage and end the government-sponsored freebies that "minority" immigrants (legal or not) now get, and ENOUGH WILL DEPORT THEMSELVES that then, forced deportation of the remaining illegals would be doable. As it is now, forced deportation would do nothing but cause open bloodshed and civil war and a lot of very good, righteous people would be killed.

Kab, I agree completely that legalizing their presence is the LAST thing we should be doing. Absolutely agreed. But in chastising firebrand, I think you're WAY off base. Then again, you live in Virginia. I live in California and always have, with lots and lots of lovely Mexicans, for almost 57 years. I've worked side-by-side with many illegals; I have even helped hide one from the INS. WHY? Because he was a better co-worker, more honest, and a hell of a lot more industrious, than the lop-headed entitlement-minded "legal" teenager who would have taken his place.

Your use of the word Gestapo is particularly offensive. WRONG. It is particularly accurate. Like I say, I live and work here in the middle of it. You in Virginia can pretend that Gestapo-type tactics wouldn't result and cry about "emotion laden pejoratives"; from Ivory Towers, it looks just that way, but here on the front lines, we know that firebrand is right.

No one is advocating rounding up the illegals and putting them on rail cars ... It sure sounds that way to me, and in that, I'll admit I may be misjudging you. I sure as hell HOPE that no one is advocating "rounding up the illegals." If they are, I invite THEM to come do it themselves and leave me out of it.

There are other ways to deal with illegal immigrants. Kabar, EVERYONE, the minimum wage in the U.S. for an unskilled teenager's job, is the equivalent of a very solid respectable middle-class wage in Mexico, where a lot of people are so poor they live in cardboard box villages. HELLO?

Of course a hard-working Mexican with a hungry family is going to come up here, legal or not, and be an VERY good employee in a minimum wage job, and not just the employer, but fellow employees will PREFER him over the "legal" teenager who shows up only about half the time, has a crappy work ethic, and thinks he's not paid enough.

GET RID OF THE MINIMUM WAGE, and then get rid of welfare entitlements for "minority" immigrants, and watch illegal immigrants go back home.

Until then, understand that "deportation" is a recipe for unrest and anger.

This thread and my comments are primarily about Cruz. I am not a Romneyfan. The wager was about if Cruz said he wants illegals to stay and WHEN he said it. You were wrong on both. Pay up..

I’d like to know all the reasons the pols favor legal status for these people.

Given the current state of American politics, my hunch says "vote-pandering" is first on the list.

Here’s your post #170 which was response to my post #169:

Which speeches are you quoting, the ones before he was nominated? It certainly wasn’t from any speeches after he was nominated.
////////////////////////////////////////////
Care to make a wager on that?

I hadn’t realized Cruz was “nominated” for president. I must have missed that in 2012. You knew I was talking about Romney. Stop trying to deflect. Keep talking up your lying, non campaigning hero, Romney, all you want. You and all the rest of the GOPe know where you all can go.

There is no way a man who only campaigns against conservatives and makes nice with liberals so much he refuses to even campaign against them, will ever be better than Ted Cruz. I may not agree with Cruz on everything, but Willard and the rest of his commie, pinko, Fabian socialist backers need to leave this party and go join the party of his best buds — the dems.

As for you and your wager, it looks like you and Romney have something in common — prevarication.

WTF are you talking about with the BS about me being a Romney fan? You either have me confused with another poster(perhaps you drink heavily while posting), or you are just a DB ....not to mention you don’ t pay up or at least admit when you are proven wrong. Ted Cruz wants illegals to stay.

I want Allen West to run. But fwiw, If your challenge is that Romney never said that he wanted illegals gone, then you are wrong there also. I don’t trust his word but he did campaign on the issue and in debates constantly said that he wanted to make it illegal for companies to hire them and the theory was that they would self deport. These are simply facts.

I bow to those more informed on the subject. Sorry about the Nazi term. I generally don’t believe in using those words. I’m certainly not a liberal, but I know Obama and Co. would love to turn us into a bunch of people who rat on one another. That’s the only point I was trying to make withthat sentence.

The Mexicans should be deported without exception. However, as you pointed out there may be practical problems with such action.

So could Forbes or Buchanan or Hunter or Keyes or Gingrich or Cain or Perry have done better than Dole or McCain or Romney?

There's an expectation that presidential candidates have a certain level of experience and political skill. For a lot of voters to be a credible candidate means to be a senator, or better, a governor, preferably from a large state, who's been able to win reelection at least once.

If you can win in a large enough constituency more than once you probably have some political skill. If you're a governor you probably know something about political administration and if you're a senator, you may know something about how Washington works. To be a columnist or a publisher or a business executive or even a congressman doesn't quite cut it, nor does being a general nowadays.

A candidate like Dole or Romney might get votes in the primaries from moderate Republicans and from people who really aren't Republicans at all, but they also get votes from people who consider themselves conservatives and are looking for a candidate who could win.

"Could" in this context doesn't mean "will" or "must." It doesn't mean anybody thought Dole or Romney or McCain was a lead-pipe cinch. It means they thought such candidates had the name-recognition and experience to do better than other candidates in the race (as if any Republican could have won the White House in 1996 or 2008).

If anybody told you that those candidates were a lock to win, they told you wrong, but I suspect what they actually said was just that they stood a better chance of winning than Forbes or Buchanan or Hunter or Keyes or Cain or Gingrich. Were they wrong? Sometimes I wish we had nominated one of your guys to see if they'd win. If they didn't we could get beyond this discussion and move on to something else.

Because he was a better co-worker, more honest, and a hell of a lot more industrious, than the lop-headed entitlement-minded "legal" teenager who would have taken his place.

I live in Fairfax County, Virginia where one in three is foreign born. Virginia has almost one million immigrants. In terms of numbers, it has the 9th highest number of immigrants among the states. There is a reason why VA is purple turning blue. We are not quite CA, but we are getting there.

Aiding and abetting illegal aliens is a federal crime. You can rationalize it any way you want, but helping them avoid the consequences of their crimes is not anything to brag about or be proud of.

You don't seem to realize that immigration, legal and illegal, is not confined to the border states. Every state is becoming a border state with 45 million foreign born in this country. In 1970, one in 21 was foreign born; today it is one in 8 the highest it has been in 90 years; and within a decade it will be one in 7, the highest in our history. The one in three ratio in Fairfax County is the same as the state of CA. I am on the front lines. In 1990 only 15% of Fairfax County was foreign born.

Calling people Gestapo who want to aid law enforcement in tracking down and deporting criminals is just WRONG period. The illegal aliens are criminals. We have had since 9/11 over 50,000 Americans murdered by criminal aliens. There are 25,000 criminal aliens in US jails who committed murder.

It sure sounds that way to me, and in that, I'll admit I may be misjudging you. I sure as hell HOPE that no one is advocating "rounding up the illegals." If they are, I invite THEM to come do it themselves and leave me out of it.

No one is suggesting mass deportation given the impracticality of doing it. However, attrition thru enforcement works. We need to enforce our laws. Are you against the Rule of Law including those that require deportation?

There are other ways to deal with illegal immigrants. Kabar, EVERYONE, the minimum wage in the U.S. for an unskilled teenager's job, is the equivalent of a very solid respectable middle-class wage in Mexico, where a lot of people are so poor they live in cardboard box villages. HELLO?

The unemployment rate in Mexico is lower than in the US. I have been to Mexico and to Bangladesh. Mexico is far better off. Does their economic condition give them the right to violate our sovereignty and many other US laws? Do you know what Mexico does with illegal aliens?

Of course a hard-working Mexican with a hungry family is going to come up here, legal or not, and be an VERY good employee in a minimum wage job, and not just the employer, but fellow employees will PREFER him over the "legal" teenager who shows up only about half the time, has a crappy work ethic, and thinks he's not paid enough.

You are conflating two different issues. First, not all illegal aliens are Mexicans. And all Mexicans are not hard working. They are using welfare to a higher degree than the native born. And many of them belong to gangs and are part of drug trafficking.

Second, putting down American workers to justify hiring illegal aliens is just part of the BS propaganda put out by the pro-amnesty crowd. Doing jobs Americans won't do is just a plain lie.

Are There Really Jobs Americans Won’t Do? A detailed look at immigrant and native employment across occupations

Of the 472 civilian occupations, only six are majority immigrant (legal and illegal). These six occupations account for 1 percent of the total U.S. workforce. Moreover, native-born Americans still comprise 46 percent of workers even in these occupations.

Many jobs often thought to be overwhelmingly immigrant (legal and illegal) are in fact majority native-born:

Maids and housekeepers: 51 percent native-born

Taxi drivers and chauffeurs: 58 percent native-born

Butchers and meat processors: 63 percent native-born

Grounds maintenance workers: 64 percent native-born

Construction laborers: 66 percent native-born

Porters, bellhops, and concierges: 72 percent native-born

Janitors: 73 percent native-born

GET RID OF THE MINIMUM WAGE, and then get rid of welfare entitlements for "minority" immigrants, and watch illegal immigrants go back home.

LOL. Yeah, right. And exactly how would you do this? Illegal aliens are not entitled to federal welfare payments except in liberal sh#tholes like CA. If you are on the front lines, why don't you start in CA and limit benefits for illegal aliens. And lets stop having sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate with federal officials on the enforcement of immigration laws.

Until then, understand that "deportation" is a recipe for unrest and anger.

Stop all deportation? You have gone off the deep end.

One another? Illegal aliens are not us. They are criminals who have violated a number of US laws, including those that are felonies. Cooperating with law enforcement to enforce our laws is not Gestapo-like nor are we the mob who don't want to rat on one another. Whatever happened to the Rule of Law?
