The Disturbing Truth Behind Your Next Income Tax Return By Jeffrey Tucker, Executive Editor, Laissez Faire Books
The least of the problems with income tax is that it takes your money. The really big problem is that the income tax takes your life. It gives the government direct access to the things you own and sets up the political-bureaucratic sector to be the final arbiter of what you can and cannot consider to be yours.
Illustrating this point is the bitter news that the IRS has considered it completely legal to demand access to your email archive whenever it wants. This news came about because of a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The filing unearthed a 2009 memo that stated outright: "The Fourth Amendment does not protect communications held in electronic storage, such as email messages stored on a server, because Internet users do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy in such communications."
Forget search warrants and legal processes. In the interest of getting its share, the government can have it all on demand. This assertion was made again in 2010 by the IRS's chief counsel: The "Fourth Amendment does not protect emails stored on a server" and there is "no privacy expectation" on email.

Bonner is one of those financial newsletter guys. I just get the emails, I don't subscribe to tip sheets as I prefer to research on my own.
Just another symptom of a government far too big and far too intrusive in our daily lives. It will only get worse as a bloated federal government looks for more things to do to interfere in our lives. A government like this develops it’s own sense of arrogance as to what is best for us serfs.
Helluva way to start a new century.
Yes we do.
Arbitrary assumption on the IRS' part. So typical of socialist/commie/fascist regimes.
A friend of mine does his email through some obscure server in Germany.
I hate google!
The executive branch of the fed government, and all of the alphabet soup agencies under it, are completely out of control, and they know it. This is how dictatorships in third world countries begin and take power.
All it takes is complacency and greed to bring it all down.
And liberals STILL think that Obama and his cronies are great.
The very fact the IRS wants intimate details of your financial data is why we need major income tax reform—that data could be used for nefarious purposes, as we all know so well from their targeting of conservative 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) groups in 2010 to (possibly) now.
I get it that the IRS is evil and the income tax system is screwed up, but I fail to see how they would gain a dime by reading my email?
There is nothing in the average person’s email that could be taxed. There is no taxes due that would be exposed in email.
Kind of a stupid starting point for the article if you ask me.
You aren't seeing the big picture here. It totally opens the floodgates to blackmail, and puts everyone at the IRS's "mercy".
If may be so bold:
People that opt for ‘electronic deposit’ of tax refunds are fools. .02
Think about it.
People think their email should be private because of the history and tradition of the US mail being private.
What they don’t realize is that the tradition of the US mail having 4th amendment protection is because it’s statutory. The postal acts that created our mail system specifically provides that 1st class mail is private and protected from warrantless searches by law.
The solution to this problem of alphabet soup agencies snooping through our email is the same. We the people must demand that Congress statutorily extend the same protection to our email that 1st class mail has.
OK? I don’t have anything in my email to be blackmailed over either, but OK.
No they don't. RINO backstabbing globalist elitists have not given them an alternative worth switching to. Cruz/Paul or Paul/Cruz could do that.
Yes, they do. His approval numbers are still high among Rats.

My point is that a lot of Dems would abandon Obama if the ‘pubs gave them a clear reason to do so. They’re not going to switch over for endless war, corporate handouts, and an HOR so incompetent that it can’t or won’t even stop the funding of Obamacare.
You would think that Reagan would be proof that the country WANTS a true conservative president.
If I wanted the IRS to read my email I would copy them on every email I send.
Maybe I will start a new email account and do just that. I will save them the time of ever having to go through my provider and just cc them on lots and lots of frivolous email since they believe they are entitled to it anyway.
If one million conservatives did just that every single day... And remember, we are just trying to help out for God and country and all that.
Yet we aren’t even allowed to see Ubama’s college records.
