People think their email should be private because of the history and tradition of the US mail being private.
What they don’t realize is that the tradition of the US mail having 4th amendment protection is because it’s statutory. The postal acts that created our mail system specifically provides that 1st class mail is private and protected from warrantless searches by law.
The solution to this problem of alphabet soup agencies snooping through our email is the same. We the people must demand that Congress statutorily extend the same protection to our email that 1st class mail has.
Excellent point. It’s the sort of thing that Rand Paul could be useful in sponsoring in the Senate.
