How did my fellow Irish-Americans get so disgusting?

When the Provisional Irish Republican Army agreed to end its paramilitary insurgency (and/or terrorist campaign) against British rule in Northern Ireland with the Good Friday accords of 1998, it was unambiguously a good thing for the people of Ireland and their British next-door neighbors. It’s not like everything suddenly became hunky-dory in the long and troubled historical relationship between those islands, but the peace has largely held – splinter groups and isolated sectarian violence aside – and an era of relative normalcy and increasing prosperity has followed. Given the global context of the 21st century, an intractable religious-cum-nationalist dispute between two tiny groups of white people in the northwest corner of Europe looks pretty close to irrelevant.

But the end of the IRA’s guerrilla war had a less salubrious effect on the Irish-American population, and I say that in full awareness that on the surface that’s an offensive statement. What I mean is that the last connection between Irish-American identity and genuine history was severed, and all we’re left with now is a fading and largely bogus afterlife. On one hand, Irishness is a nonspecific global brand of pseudo-old pubs, watered-down Guinness, “Celtic” tattoos and vague New Age spirituality, designed to make white people feel faintly cool without doing any of the hard work of actually learning anything. On the other, it’s Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, Pat Buchanan and Rep. Peter King, Long Island’s longtime Republican congressman (and IRA supporter), consistently representing the most stereotypical grade of racist, xenophobic, small-minded, right-wing Irish-American intolerance. When you think of the face of white rage in America, it belongs to a red-faced Irish dude on Fox News.

If leftist talking points were leeches, I’d be dead from blood loss just from that article.

Irish-American who ends up hating his fellows for their "whiteness."

Just another sad casualty of liberal personality disorder.

How would the organizers of “Gay Pride” parades treat a group of Irish Catholics (or anyone wearing enough emerald green) wanting to march under banners quoting Bible verses, and other sources, about the sin of sodomy? It would be interesting to test that.

Hey, the stereotypes are true. I watched several Irish rock music videos last night and each video featured drinking beer, a dark beer of some kind; probably a Guinness.

This article buys into “critical race theory” in vogue on the college campuses which, among other things, holds that whites are better off than other groups because of “white privilege.”

...face of white rage in America...

Strange! When I think of the "face of white rage in America" I think of how intolerant liberals act when us freedom-loving folk don't kneel down to their altar of (fake) diversity. They really almost blow a head gasket.....

Garbage is a compliment

It is nothing. It says nothing.

What is hi point in six legnthy paragraphs?

He hates the IRA almost as much as Fox News?

Is this a st patricks day hungover rant over losing the right for gays to march in his parade as a bloc?

If so, I’d like to see just one person, one pundit, mention that this motion of theirs was struck down by the US Supreme Court. It’s the proverbial law of the land they, and mayor de Blasio and all the other ‘get used to it’ Obama and abortion supporters can just get used to.

But whatever his rant, I will point attention to what remains of the Irish, not to list, lest I omit, just off the top of my head, the lasting wonderful contributions to our country, which ALWAYS give precedent and due respect to their home, the USA:

All of the beautiful churches, including and especially, st Patrick’s cathedral in NY (if they think this was built by the government or by non Catholics, as the rocketship churches that were built by non catholic and govt funding in the 1970s to the present

The contributions to classical education and the arts.

And their contribution is substantial if it can be noted by the presence of the majority of those wearing green, mostly from what I can tell non Irish in tribute and appreciation

And just to clarify, those who fought the militant gay lobby, properly, in court, in 1995, and won, properly, decision written by Souter, are the Ancient Order of Hibernians, who began in the mid 1800s amidst violent persecution in Northern Ireland, no strangers to religious persecution by oppressive authoritarian forces, they were seen, as always, meekly marching their kilt clad selves up Fifth Avenue last Monday to honor that great Saint who lived 1700 years ago and who keep traditional tunes alive but who honor THIS great country

But I do not know what this guy is rambling about. Just a hit on Fox News

It’s ok make fun of the drinking. We can take it. When most wear green on st Patrick’s day even here in flyover, we know there’s a lot more to it, and we know how to have a party

to get back that feeling we briefly had of being an immigrant group that was trying to confront its history, and to see the prison of whiteness for what it really is.

How do you spell "crack-pot?"

I seriously doubt that those Irish immigrants who came to America in good Faith--that is with a desire to join established, culturally sound societies of responsible citizens--would have seen their racial ancestry as a "prison."

It is this sick neurotic writer, not those whom he derides, who is disgusting.

The author seems to be stuck in the 1970’s. Back then we had an Irish neighbor who thought it was very clever to go around raising money for the IRA (my parents warned us, don’t buy candy bars or raffle tickets from him, as the money would be used to blow-up innocent people in Britain)

Has been many years since that kind of garbage has been an issue.

That’s a very good point. Let the banners proclaim the prayers for the troupbled spirits marching under rainbow flags. Somehow, I suspect the response would be: “Not in our parade”.

USFRIENDINVICTORIA:" How would the organizers of “Gay Pride” parades treat a group of Irish Catholics (or anyone wearing enough emerald green)

They would object , especially if the Irish were singing and dancing to the "Hookey- Pookey " ,
especially the poke it in , and then poke it out part .
