CLOVER, S.C. — York County deputies say an officer shot a 70-year-old man reaching for a cane during a traffic stop because he thought the man was grabbing a rifle from the bed of his pickup truck.

Sheriff's office spokesman Trent Faris said Knox stopped 70-year-old Bobby Canipe (kah-NYP') of Lincolnton, N.C., for an expired license plate Tuesday evening. Investigators say Canipe got out of his pickup and reached into the truck bed for his cane and Knox fired several shots, hitting Canipe once.

Faris says the shooting was unfortunate, but appeared to be appropriate because Knox felt an imminent threat to his life.

They now have an automatic way out with, "I was afraid for my life", So lets have at it.
They just might find out that knife cuts both ways, if that is an affirmative defense.
The ranks of today’s police forces are rapidly filling with low IQ, easily “frightened” individuals afflicted with an overabundance of both chronic bad judgement and a sense of entitlement.
My understanding is that 'cop' was never meant as a pejorative in common usage, as its origin was a British acronym for 'constable on patrol'.
Having said that however, if the 'good' ones don't get a pronto handle on the lunatics/cowards/thugs among 'em, it's not going to end well for many of them, indiscriminately.
If the LEO in question was “in fear of his life” for what appears to be a simple traffic stop, then he needs to find another job - ASAP.
The next time this LEO “in fear of his life” shoots someone the victim might not survive. Then what?

Cop pulls old guy over. Cop approaches vehicle. What’s the first thing ANY cop is going to do when walking past an open pickup bed while approaching the driver’s window?
Ummmmm, look inside the bed?
I think Sheriff Andy Taylor’s one bullet rule in the Deputy Fife’s pocket would have helped in the situation.

Thanks...YES, I was aware of the origin but think the ‘derogatory’ thought came from enough ‘Why You Dirty Coppers’ (have to use Cagney voice) from the movies.
When growing up most of the time the Police were referred to as COPS it was in a ‘snarling, spit it out’ type usage.
Right on about the pronto handle on situation or THEY all will be approaching cars with 2 or 3 officers, guns drawn or even go to the ‘Everybody out of the car and lay on the pavement’ for a ‘license plate light out’ because this bunch of idiotic renegades will have people ready to draw on the Police whenever one gets near you....
They keep it up and when walking down the street there won’t be a side to cross to when you feel ‘threatened’ by another pedestrian...3 or 4 cops together will be coming under the ‘loitering’ laws for supposed criminals...

The cops here need to abide by the same Rules Of Engagement that our military has to abide by overseas.

There could be numerous reason why he exited his truck, such as he was tired of waiting after the cop walked back to his car to play with his MDT, to talk to his girlfriend on his cell phone, or possibly waiting for wants and warrants to come back, or the cop could have simply turned his back for a moment, etc., etc,..
The reports never indicated the old guy disobeyed a command to stay in this vehicle...If that occurred, you can bet it would have been repeated in the articles.

Actually I was NOT trying to cut the cop a break, I was referring to why the COP wanted him out of the vehicle for an expired tag.
Also, how close was the cop?
Maybe he hadn’t gotten out of his car yet and the ‘older’ Gentleman exited his vehicle, cop looks up from his computer and sees him pulling something out of his truck bed?
Again NOT justifying the cop but I kind of figure if he had been to the cab he would have ‘visually checked out the bed of the truck’. Kind of hard ‘hiding’ a weapon there especially if the Man needed it to walk around it would have been handy.
That is why I said it looked ‘fishy’ to me.
