CLOVER, S.C. York County deputies say an officer shot a 70-year-old man reaching for a cane during a traffic stop because he thought the man was grabbing a rifle from the bed of his pickup truck.
-snip-
Sheriff's office spokesman Trent Faris said Knox stopped 70-year-old Bobby Canipe (kah-NYP') of Lincolnton, N.C., for an expired license plate Tuesday evening. Investigators say Canipe got out of his pickup and reached into the truck bed for his cane and Knox fired several shots, hitting Canipe once.
-snip-
Faris says the shooting was unfortunate, but appeared to be appropriate because Knox felt an imminent threat to his life.

Sieg f'n Heil, baby !
I've been railing for nigh on 30yrs that PC would be the death of our freedoms & society.
Oddly enough, there are far few eyes rolling these days, as 'there he goes again' meets stark and metastasizing føscist reality.
This morning, it's likely that Mr. Canipe would also agree.
I vote the second item.
“...the officer that shot him should put the tags on his plates every year.”
The officer that shot him should be in prison making the tags for his car. This asshole cop is dangerous and should not be free to roam among real people.
George Zimmerman felt the same way under circumstances that were a lot more threateneing and a lot more imminent than Officer Felt's situation. Yet, Zimmerman was charged with homicide and forced to defend himself on a national stage and even though aquitted, there remains a $10,000 bounty on his head. Officer Knox will get a couple of days paid vacation that will be officially mischaracterized as "paid adminstrative leave."
It’s not the ROE in question here. It’s the willingness of American military to kill other Americans.
Kent State? Waco?
Since there’s no such thing thing as a moral absolute, following orders is just another choice, one that will keep the obedient out of trouble.
If you think that the cops are shooting a lot of people after seeing imaginary guns, just wait until the use of marijuana is legalized. It[marijuana legalization] is coming because the government knows that dopers make the best slaves.
I wonder if the Sheriff is going to send the old guy a bill for the bullets that were used to shoot him with.
The police are now the enemy of the public. They have become the jack-boot at the throat of every citizen and a constant threat to our safety.
The jackasses should fear going to work.
It could be both. In an earlier post it read that the deputy gave aid to the “criminal” until EMS arrived. My guess is that he held his nose and put his hand over his mouth.
When they stop doing the will of their masters.
Why not get out and lie face down with your hands over your head ?.
If she runs across the right cop, yes.
Used to be a time when police were, for the most part, guys that had done some time in the Service.
Guess they were considered ‘rough around the edges’ and they maybe tended to ‘bully’ people around but you never heard of the shootings like we have been having.
I think a lot of the trouble started when ‘they’ started requiring some College, dropped the physical standards to accommodate women and ‘brains’ that couldn’t perform, then had to start hiring minorities of all sorts so you end up with Barney Fife looking type deputies on the SWAT team.
This particular story seems fishy as to WHY was the guy getting out of the truck?
Seems funny to order him out for a license plate violation.
I am not nor have ever been a cop but isn’t observance common practice?
Apparently it was an open bed (if he was able to exit the vehicle and get his cane - which had to be accessible if he needed it) -
I think on initial confrontation as walking up to the vehicle you kind of look in the bed, out of habit if nothing else.
And I don’t make it a practice to get pulled over but the few times I have, the ‘rule’ had been stay in your vehicle and don’t argue with the guy - his ‘job’ was to ticket or warn you for some infraction and your ‘job’ was to make him feel NOT threatened by you.
I’ve had a DL since the ‘50s and am sure though things have changed, the basic ‘rules’ remain the same.
I know I will get ‘flamed’ for it but I feel most of OUR problems started with the idea of not being able to protect your property under the guise of ‘you can replace the truck’ so no sense shooting someone that is in YOUR YARD, stealing it or the tools or such in it that allowed you to work and pay taxes to be able to support yourself and the idiots that are robbing you.
Then the police started resembling the Military with tanks, high powered weapons and the loveable SWAT teams.
Cops in ‘my day’ may have been a bunch of ‘dumb vets’ but you would hardly see 40 cops standing around waiting orders to run into a building that someone was shooting from or some other such thing.
Maybe not as smart but.....
Oh yes, I always used to think calling Police cops was an insult BUT from the actions of a few, I have taken a different view on a lot of things, if nothing else, when are they going to start seriously policing themselves?
I can tell the difference between a walking cane and rifle and I am half to three quarters blind.
Paid vacation time !

Pretty trigger happy, if you ask me. Which begs the question of what kind of crap these guys are being fed By DHS, FBI, and all the federal agencies who produce training materials for local law enforcement.
Remember, old rural white guys are "potential terrorists" now.
Maybe they ought to change back to the standard silhouette targets from the picture ones, too. It seems like (some) LEOs are ready to shoot anyone now, for little or no reason.
