CLOVER, S.C. — York County deputies say an officer shot a 70-year-old man reaching for a cane during a traffic stop because he thought the man was grabbing a rifle from the bed of his pickup truck.

-snip-

Sheriff's office spokesman Trent Faris said Knox stopped 70-year-old Bobby Canipe (kah-NYP') of Lincolnton, N.C., for an expired license plate Tuesday evening. Investigators say Canipe got out of his pickup and reached into the truck bed for his cane and Knox fired several shots, hitting Canipe once.

Faris says the shooting was unfortunate, but appeared to be appropriate because Knox felt an imminent threat to his life.

Well, at least the officer made it home to his family that night.

And that is all that truly matters.

Good thing his dog stayed in the truck.

He is expected to recover - I sure hope so.

Are registration tags worth a life? There is no real purpose to registration tags...oh yeah, except revenue, and revenue trumps everything.

What ever the settlement, he should get free vehicle registration for life, and the officer that shot him should put the tags on his plates every year.

That is the catch-all justification for cops’ use deadly force. “The officer felt threatened.” At least the cop went home safely.

Does the legal term “reasonable and probable grounds” not apply in SC?

LEO pulls the old man over for simple expired tags, never sees a rifle, yet shoots the man saying he feared for his life?

What the heck is going in this country? Just what kind of people are being hired to be policemen? I have never heard of so many shootings by police.

I do note that no dogs were available for target practice...

How could the LEO think it's a rifle, if he never ever saw a rifle?

Maybe it is time for a new FR ping list: “Jack-Booted thugs”.
It seems to be a growing problem in the states.

Wow, what an incredibly arrogant attitude by the department. I'm deeply shocked.

What's interesting to me is that this is the kind of knee-jerk reaction that liberals predicted concealed carry proponents would unleash, when those laws gained in popularity, yet it is perfectly appropriate when done by law enforcement. Well, unfortunate, but appropriate.

I blame a lot of it on the current cop movies and TV shows.
The cops today grow up seeing TV/movies with cops in full swat gear, yelling “Get on the ground. Get on the ground NOW”.
There seem to be very few “good old boys on the beat” today.

Uh, yeah.

A rifle is pretty hard to swing from a vehicle to “On target”.

Does the camera show him delivering an order to stop?

If you walk up on the guy and shine a light in the vehicle on approach and inspect the cab wouldn’t you see a cane?

Maybe it was an AR-15 walking stick, with a magazine attached.

Did the officer demand he exit the vehicle for some reason?

Was the officer high on something? Tired?

Dumb as hell?

Heck, I once pulled my Mom over for driving with Jesus stickers on her front bumper.

Soon as she figured out it was me she came right out of the car and the officer I was with offered to mace me for the prank if she wanted it done.

Was pretty dang’d funny.

I walked up on plenty of vehicles as a “Sheriff Explorer” learning how to approach and ascertain safety.

This seems stupid and very flawed judgement...
