Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-Ky.) are now in position to end the Tea Partys death grip on the Republican Partys political future.
Last week, Boehner and McConnell faced down the Tea Partys threat to cripple the government when they supported raising the nations debt ceiling. That move prevented GOP political suicide.
If the nations credit rating, stocks and the recovery went down the sewer because of Republicans refusal to raise the debt ceiling, the GOPs chances in the midterm elections would have been severely damaged.
Having successfully defied the Tea Party on the debt ceiling, now it is time for Boehner and McConnell to use that momentum to pass three bills: An extension of unemployment benefits for people suffering long-term joblessness; a minimum wage hike; and, most important of all, immigration reform.
The Tea Party caucus in the House and the Tea Party star in the Senate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) are never going to love Boehner or McConnell. Both Congressional leaders have tried for years to accommodate Tea Party passions but they can never do enough.
By standing up to the Tea Party now, the GOP congressional leadership can create a legacy. They may suffer attacks from right-wing talk radio. But they will go into history as the team that made it possible for future Republicans to win elections with the support of some working class and Hispanic voters.

Juan is one of the AA elitists who makes millions from the DC system.
Pray America is Waking
Tea party exposes the racist communist agenda of the Democrats, so Juan the Democrat wants the RINOs to stop it.
some things are so self evident they don’t even need a sarcasm signal
Hey Juan — you all could keep chasing that illusionary Tea Party. In November, you will find out that it’s simply WE THE PEOPLE.
Love it!
Thanks Juan, I am sure they will head your well meaning advice.
What a country we live in where an idiot like Juan Williams actually gets a paid forum to deliver his political opinions.
Juan Williams is a card carrying moron.

I disagree with Juan Williams because he is a liberal. Thus, I try to be more careful when evaluating my reaction to his predictions, opinions and views. But given that, I have to say that I find him to be one of the most delusional commentators out there. The objective evidence tells me that yes, there is a war between the GOP-e and the so called Tea Party (which is actually just the conservative wing of the Republican party re-branded into a convenient label that allows its opponents to demonize it as racist, homophobic and sexist). But the objective evidence also tells me that the Tea Party is not the player in this war playing defense.
It is the other party that is facing runoff elections and tightening primaries. Why? It is because of a simple immutable fact, the party base decides what the mood of the party is, not commentators (especially liberal one’s like Juan) who are engaged in wish casting and not the GOP-e. All the DC Beltway insulation in the world won’t save them from having to face the voters come primary time. Is the so called Tea Party on the run? Not so long as the voters continue to distrust and dislike the DC elite.
The Tea Party is the Dems and rinos greatest fear of busting up the good old boy club.
Shame on FauX Nooz for giving this nudnik a platform.
If "defying the Tea Party" translates as "telling the Tea Party to stay home on election day" (unless it's to vote for a Tea Party candidate), I guess it's "Mission Accomplished!" for Boehner & McConnell...
The trouble today in all the analysis, is the ubiquitous reference at Washington and elsewhere to my Party's "Establishment." The GOP does not have an Establishment~~it has owners~~a seemingly small but, in truth, very important distinction.
Why, so? Well, sir--when you have owners--you can get rid of Jake Boehner and 5 strata below him and likewise Tommy Donahue at the Chamber and they will always be replaced by men who are pleasing to the owners.
Jake and Tommy do not work for GOP Establishment~they work for the Party's owners--in a dynamic like that--when the owners move in a manner that seems to distress the people, they are simply doing what they want-- as do all owners.
For example, this is why, when a vast majority of the people do not want the health care law, the GOP appears flatfooted--they in fact are doing the bidding of the owners--who want the healthcare so that in the out years they don't have to pay their employees anything.
Likewise immigration--an even larger majority of Americans is against the proposed immigration laws and yet the GOP--handed this issue and the healthcare issue, refuses to build a national mid-term campaign around these issues which would be a sure winner for the GOP--. Why? The owners want immigration in order to flood the nation with slave labor they can exploit.
The owners of the Republican Party have always had a somewhat removed attitude about politics--and about winning elections--put another way--they don't really care if they appear to win~because they really never lose.
I grew up among the owners. Uncles used to say when I was learning politics--"Jack--Let the Democrats win--we already own everything anyway." I used to think this to be a sort of silly, cream trousers, cream shoe, affectation, but now I realize it is meant in dead earnest--the owners don't really care if the GOP wins elections or no--they care about their money--solely~~and they always get it.
We must internalize this--Jake and Tommy do not work for the GOP Establishment~~they are servants~~-they work for the owners--if they are replaced--they will be replaced by others who better please those owners.
And there you have the reason why The Stupid Party seems to be "stupid". We conservatives don't hear the dog whistle of the owners, so we don't get it when John Boehner jumps up off the couch and runs to the "Immigration Reform" door and starts scratching at it and whining.
Juan Locutus is channeling the mind of the collective...
He is telling everyone that they fear the Tea Party!
Curious tactic, as the Silent Majority has found its voice by becoming the TEA Party.
So lemme see now, Juanista is against the Majority who WERE silent, but now speak in Conservative Verse?
Silent or Vocal, the Majority still buy the majority of stuff advertised on TV.
BTW, remind me again why businesses bother to advertise on FOX?
Juan has always been against the majority, silent or not, he just does not know it. He has deluded himself into believing that his collective is the majority, just like he has deluded himself into believing in his intellectual and political superiority.
The Tea Party has no leader or center to attack. Attack it, you only attack the people.
Market share, and profound gratitude for the fact that they do not employ that self important snot, Rachel Maddow.
