Leading Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm left more than £1.8million in his will, it has been revealed.
Hobsbawm, who died aged 95 in October 2012, was one of Britains most eminent historians, but he was widely criticised for his defence of communist regimes.
He was accused of being an apologist for the totalitarian evils of Soviet communism and labelled a useful idiot.
According to records held at the Brighton probate office, Hobsbawm who joined the Communist Party at 14 and once described himself as an unrepentant communist left an estate with assets totalling £1,835,341.
The bulk is to be held in trust, with the income going to his second wife Marlene. The couple were married for 50 years.
Hobsbawm left the capital of the trust to the University of Warwick and his two children from his second marriage digital entrepreneur Andy, 50, and PR guru Julia.
His son Joshua Bennathan, 55, who was born from an affair with Marion Bennathan that took place between his first and second marriage was left just £3,000.

Well, 1.8 Million Pounds is about 2.88 Million dollars in today’s exchange rate.
Decent, but not super rich.
But then if he were a real Marxist, he’d want to give it to the government.
Another hypocritical b*tch ass Marxist. Do what I say not what I do.
Distribute it evenly to every peasant on the street at high noon on the anniversary of this socialist’s death.
Not a Thrupence to the widow. The state shall provide.
When is this world going to start treating Marxists the same as Nazis? Marxism - 100 million deaths. Nazism - 25 million. Yet Marxists are regularly voted into office, that’s just mind blowing to me. I mean what is the rational here? “Oh 100 million is not as bad as 25 million”?
Marxists are filthy hypocrites. They keep their money and refuse to give it to the collectivity, which can then redistribute it to the have-nots.
Well, Marxist “thinkers” and government members are the animals that are more equal than others. That’s how Obama got himself and the missus a $4,000,000 vacation in Hawaii - heck, that’s twice Hobsbawm’s estate. Guess Eric wasn’t trying hard enough.
Some are MORE EQUAL than others....
Some animals are more equal than others.
Hes lucky to have been a marxist in britain. If he were a narxist in a truly marxist country like the old Soviet union, he never would have earned that much. On top of that he would have never lived long enough to see 95. The state would have confiscated his wealth, whatever he did manage to accumulate, then shot him.
The KGB paid him well.
Marxists will never be held to any standard because Marxists care about the “little people.” Just ask Kim Jung-un. Victor Kravchenko, a Soviet defector, wrote “I found myself among men who could eat ample and dainty food in full view of starving people not only with a clear conscience but with a feeling of righteousness, as if they were performing a duty to history.” These people are not hypocrites. They sincerely believe that because of their psychological sacrifice (their concern) they deserve to live lives of luxury.
Very much like my Spanish great grandfather.
He was born a peasant, was drafted into the Spanish army, was sent to the Philippines and by all accounts was a fine soldier. Upon the Spanish surrender he stayed and through hard work and enterprise became extremely wealthy. He was however a lifelong socialist and anti-American in spite of his success in the system they brought to the islands. A lot of these political attitudes in Europe are religion substitutes and tribal markers.
He collected significant royalties through his writing, academic though it was. His works were on reading lists for decades.
Bingo! One the people who make up the left left the religion of their youth, they have substituted statism as their new religion. Catholic, protestant or Jew.
As the old saying goes, they are trying to fill a G_d shaped hole in their soul.
Marxists goal is to impoverish everyone but themselves I think
