Would you rather sip on unpasteurized milk or a cold glass of soda? Do you prefer Saturday lunch at a fast food joint or a farmers market?
Regardless of your choices, your food freedom -- your right to grow, raise, produce, buy, sell, share, cook, eat, and drink the foods you want -- is under attack. Here are ten food freedom issues to keep an eye on in 2014.
1: FDA May Ban or Restrict a Growing Number of Food Ingredients. The FDA has proposed banning oils containing trans fats, an ingredient found in foods like coffee creamers and muffins. If you think thats an overstep, consider that the agency is also likely to propose unprecedented new restrictions on food ingredients like sodium and caffeine in 2014.
2: Raw Milk Bans Drawing Fire. Unpasteurized (raw) milk is increasingly popular, but because consuming raw milk carries some risk, the FDA and some states ban its sale.
Yet the risks of drinking raw milk are similar to those posed by eating a medium-rare hamburger, spinach, cantaloupe or other foods that rightly warrant nothing more than a government warning sticker. Look for continued fights over overly strict raw milk regulations in 2014.
3: New York Citys Soda Ban Not Dead Yet. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloombergs ham-handed attempt to ban large sodas earned him scorn from Jon Stewart and the New York Times editorial board. It also forced a broad coalition of unions, soda makers, restaurants, and minority businesses to sue to overturn the ban. Nevertheless, Bloombergs successor Bill DeBlasio has vowed to forge ahead with the soda ban. After two stinging losses, the city has filed a last gasp court appeal that should be decided in 2014.

I agree on the trans fats. Last time I had my blood pressure taken at a clinic it was 104 over 55. I like, probably need, a fair amount of salt. I am also retired and in good health. I try to eat half of my food raw. I would like to have well regulated certified raw milk available. However, in 1909, my father was one of 4 children who survived of 86 that got typhoid from an infected cow.
I am very concerned about the GMO food issue. Unless multi generation animal studies are done, we can’t be sure that they will not have dangerous effects. Also some may be more a problem than others. For example food with Round Up ready protection might have dangers that frost resistant protection might not. Meanwhile, all should be labeled so we can choose whether or not to buy. I hear McDonalds is preparing to use GMO potatoes for their fries. Should they be required to post this information at their outlets?
They are also taxing the pot at every step, so it is generating multiple taxes, raising the price beyond what the average recreational user would pay. This protects the market for the illegal sellers.
The Internet is full of copycat recipes for all the fast food brands and junk food brands.
Roll your own. Grow your own. Raise your own. Make your own. We’re all already criminals, so what does it matter?
If raw milk was handled the way pasteurized milk is, with the milk of thousands of cows blended together, I don’t think it would be safe, particularly if the cattle were as sick as most grainfed, feedlot cattle are.
I think it would be quite reasonable to have regulations on how raw milk is handled, that might be stricter than for pasteurized milk. But there’s no justification for absolute bans.
Bogart?
No, thanks. I have had more than my fill.
A reference to a song from the sixties, wherein it was sung:
Don’t Bogart that Joint,
my friend.
Pass it over to me....
In other words, pass that smoke over rather than hogging the thing to yourself.
The problem is that trans fats arent food. They dont exist in nature, and should never have been allowed in food in the first place.

Who’s allowing?
If I want to live on Butter Flavor Crisco lollipops, it’s my choice and my right to do so.
Totalitarian control - continuous, ongoing...
The smoking bans were just the beta version of Big Tyranny.

And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!
If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward. ―

I very much agree about GMOs. Safeway is carrying an amazing store line of non-GMO foods — everything from cereal to macaroni and cheese to ketchup, and they seem to keep expanding. That’s about all we buy (plus organic produce). The prices are quite good and comparable to GMO junk we would have been buying anyway.
They’re also stocking more non-GMO from other companies (e.g. Amy’s).
I’ve tried some other non-GMO store line cereals (e.g. from Fry’s), but didn’t care for the lack of flavor there.
My husband and I voted “no” on every smoking measure in AZ — they came bang-bang-bang, and we don’t smoke. We knew what was coming after the smoking police got done....
So you are Taxed Enough Already?
Lois Lerner has her eye on you.
Really? Even the naturally occurring trans fat found in meat and dairy?
and should never have been allowed in food in the first place.
Really? Big government should, once again, protect us from ourselves? The anti-trans fat lobby doesn't seem to realize that TFA's actually provide some benefits. The most important benefit being the prevention of rancidity. When food rancidifies, free radicals form....in large numbers. Without TFA's, consumers will be ingesting significantly more free radicals; and that presents a hell of a lot more danger than any alleged health effects of a diet where just 2% of total calories, on average, comes from trans fat.
But that kind of information won't stop the do gooders from doing good. These are the same people, of course, who were telling us 20 years ago that saturated fats were killing us and needed to be eliminated. The circle jerk continues.
Bogart, in this use, means to keep the joint all to yourself.
